  • Fall 2021 Spin Playlists

    Fall 2021 Spin Playlists

You asked for more, so I’m coming atcha with not one but TWO Fall 2021 Spin Playlists.

I’ve noticed lately that Google searches for my spin playlist posts have been greater than usual. And it’s no surprise why—2020 prompted many of us to get a spin bike at home, and it’s easier than ever to get an amazing cardio workout on your own, without the studio prices or commute. Working out at home is so efficient. It’s what I’ve been doing since I stopped teaching spin professionally. I love it, and I’m here to help you get your daily movement in with these two spicy Fall 2021 Spin Playlists.

Looking for more? I’ve shared tons of spin playlists on the blog over the years—you can find them here. Don’t miss this awesome playlist from Spring 2021!

It’s also always so important to spin with proper form, both for your body’s health and so you can get the most out of your workout! Learn about proper spin form here.

I was a spin instructor for about 5 years in San Diego.

I love this workout because, for me at least, it doesn’t feel like you’re working out because you get to jam to awesome music. This is actually a form of active meditation—you find a sense of FLOW riding to the beat of the music. It lights my body up.

Plus, spin is a wonderful cardio option because it’s low impact—easier on your joints. But it really gets your heart rate up and is a highly effective workout! I teach in an intervals style, meaning we alternate from faster tempos to slower, kind of like riding over a bunch of hills. You push yourself and then get the chance to recover, and repeat. This keeps your cortisol down (we don’t need to feel more stressed while you work out, life is intense enough) and is the best method for strengthening your heart.

I recently had an appointment with a Neurosurgeon about some disk degeneration I have in my neck (this is why I’m really big on neck wellness), and asked him for tips to maintain a healthy spine as I age. One of his top tips was to avoid impact activities like running! Another great excuse to ditch the running shoes for some spin shoes (these Slipstream shoes from TIEM are my personal favorite).

    How to do this class:

This is a 45 minute spin class where you ride to the beat of the music (like SoulCycle). If you struggle with rhythm, do your best. Find the beat and then think Right Foot, Left Foot, Right, Left etc.

Always make sure you have plenty of resistance on. For most bikes, at least 2 full turns on your dial is a good minimum. You should always feel a little resistance under your feet but also be able to keep up with the beat.

There’s always the option to go faster or slower, of course—you’re in charge, so listen to your body. Push yourself, but not in a punishing way, you know? I always teach to work out with self love as the guiding light.

I’ve also added optional choreography to do whenever the chorus of each song drops!

Here are the Fall 2021 Spin Playlist breakdowns, with choreography:

  • The Top 7 Must-Have Yoga Teacher Tools For A Successful Live Group Class

    Yoga Teacher Tools

Being a yoga teacher is one of the most fulfilling careers out there—and I’ve found the best tools to help you teach a successful live Group Class!

Teaching yoga for a living is, well, awesome. You get to do what you love while helping people create positive change in their lives! And with the right yoga teacher tools, you can build a whole career out of teaching on your own.

One of the best ways to get started as a new teacher is by teaching at yoga studios, where you can build a client following and learn from fellow teachers. But to be honest, it’s rarely possible to make a living teaching just at studios full-time, since they often pay a (low) flat rate to teach. Trust me: I tried it for a few years earlier in my career making around $30 a class, and it led to burnout.

To really teach yoga full-time, you have to build your own business.

This is definitely challenging, but it’s also even more rewarding. You become not just a yoga teacher, but a full entrepreneur, running a business of the brand that is you and your style of teaching. And you get to manage the finances rather than depending on a paycheck from a studio. The more clients you can attract, especially with Group Classes, the more money you can make. And you set your rates! That’s what makes being a fitnesspreneur so exciting—you can build and grow a career doing exactly what you want, as your own boss!

You can also get really creative about what you want your work life to look like: you can teach Private sessions, teach over Zoom (which I do), or lead group classes in spaces like public parks (with a permit, depending on where it is) or rented spaces.

I’ve been teaching since 2012, and these are the best yoga teacher tools I’ve found for a top-quality class.

One big benefit with teaching at a studio is that you have access to all their professional equipment. But it just takes a few key investments to be able to teach high-quality classes on your own! These reliable tools won’t let you down and will help you deliver a professional class with no distractions.

    Yoga Teacher Tools

    1. Speaker

If you use music in your yoga classes, a good speaker is KEY. The ION Block Rocker Plus (about $230—pictured above is an older model) produces powerful, loud, clear, high-quality sound, and it has wheels and a handle for easy transport! I love music and am a little bit of a self-proclaimed sound-quality snob, so trust me when I say this speaker delivers. It is a little bit of an investment, but mine has lasted for years.

    2. Microphone

I’ve tried a few different microphones, and this one from Winbridge (about $40, pictured at the top of this page) is my favorite for a few reasons: it stays put, doesn’t give a ton of screechy feedback, and has a decent range (so you can walk around). It works great with the ION Block Rocker Plus or any speaker that has a MIC in input hole (it’s not Bluetooth).

    Yoga Teacher Tools

    3. Voice Amplifier

If you don’t plan to use music, a really simple and awesome mic option is this MAONO Voice Amplifier (about $35). It’s a mic and speaker in one! The sound comes out of this cute speaker box that you can either clip to your waistband, or you can use the belt provided. The sound quality is loud and clear with minimal feedback, and it’s an even easier option than using a whole speaker setup for just a mic. I use this to teach my weekly classes in San Diego at Sunset Cliffs and it’s strong enough to project out to a group of 30+ people.

    4. Mini Speaker

On the flip side, if you want to use a speaker but not necessarily a mic, the best small speaker I’ve ever found is the UE Boom (about $150). It’s only about 7 inches long and weighs less than 2 pounds, which means you can easily throw it in your backpack or gym back to bring around town to teach. It’s even waterproof and virtually indestructible! And the sound quality is the BEST. I use this to play music at home and it’s just so good.

Image Credit: Adam Connie Sr. @thepeacefuljedi at my Sunset Cliffs class in San Diego

    5. ThoughtFulls Cards

A great way to build your business is by giving your clients a special gift they can take home with them that has your contact information! These ThoughtFulls Cards (about $30 for a four pack, 120 total cards) are absolutely perfect. They pop open to reveal a secret inspirational quote, and every card is different, so it’s really exciting for people to open them and share their quotes with each other or on social media. There’s also blank lines on the back of the cards for you to write information. You can share your website or Instagram handle like a business card so your clients have the information they need to work with you further!

    6. Essential Oil Spray

Nothing helps set the mood for a yummy yoga class like a good scent! I do recommend only using this in small group situations where you can ask if everyone is okay with you using it, as some people have allergies or are especially sensitive to smells. But if everyone is down for some essential oils, there is no better-smelling spray than Live with Moxy’s Lady Magic New Moon Mist ($15). It smells like vanilla, citrus, and black pepper and is infused with crystals and herbs for some special magic. It’s from a small business and only available direct from their website, but trust me it’s so, so worth it. It’s sweet and bright and energetic, and a rejuvenating crowd pleaser.

    7. Journal for Mailing List Sign-Ups

Like the ThoughtFulls Cards, another way to get clients to come back and work with you again, it’s a great idea to have a place to collect their email addresses for your mailing list. Your mailing list is KEY to being able to communicate with your clients and share all that you’re offering. It’s probably your most valuable asset as a yoga teacher! Any cute notebook will do, but this glitter pink Ban.do one is my favorite. Be sure to mention it at the end of all your classes to help build up your client list.

With the right yoga teacher tools, all you have to worry about is teaching the best group class you can!

Let me know if you try any of these out, and what you think!

  • Spring 2021 Spin Playlist

    Winter 2021 Spin Playlist

Get excited for a new Spring 2021 Spin Playlist I’ve created for you!

Do you have a home spin bike? Well, lucky you! I’m here to help spice up your at-home workout, for free, with a full 45 minute Spring 2021 Spin Playlist and class guide. Get ready for a killer workout!

I stopped teaching spin in July 2019 to give myself the space to focus on growing my Yoga and Meditation career, but I still love spin as much as I ever did. When I stopped teaching, I began looking for a used spin bike so I could keep doing the workout at home—and ended up finding one from a studio that was selling their bikes.

This was a huge advantage to me when the Coronavirus pandemic hit in March 2020, and spin studios shut down. Bikes began selling out all over, but since I already had one, I could still get my stress-relieving workout in, at home! If you have one, too, you know what a lifesaver it’s been. So I’m grateful for all the steps that led me to where I’m at today.

When I decided to step off the podium, it was bittersweet. To be honest with you, I’d had a not-great experience as a spin instructor. I was unhappy with the studio I was at, and the demands of teaching weren’t fairly compensated. But I loved spin so much I was willing to take a lot of hits just to be able to keep teaching. And the years I spent teaching spin taught me so, so much.

And now, I still create new classes just for myself—or rather, for all of us, since I get to share with you all here! Who knows; I may even return to the podium one day.

Spin to me is the absolute best form of cardio.

I used to be a runner, in high school and college. But by 2014 I kept hurting my ankles, or my knees (I may be getting older), which is what led me to search for a cardio workout alternative that could challenge me, hold my interest, and give me mental space. I needed a form of high-intensity cardio that was also low-impact and easy on the joints.

    Enter: SPIN.

    If you know, you know.

I talk about this a lot on the blog, but I really believe in the Holy Trinity of Fitness: Cardio, Strength Training, and Yoga (Active Recovery). Spin happens to be the form of cardio I love the most because it doesn’t feel like working out to me (most of the time).

Instead, it feels like you’re dancing on a bike. I get lost in the music, and the beat guides your feet. Plus, nothing’s better at burning off anxiety like sprinting as fast as you can.

    How to do this class:

I’ve created a full 45 minute-long workout class for you to do at home. I used to teach in a choreography-led style of spin, where you do fun moves on the bike to the beat of the music, so that’s what you’ve got here!

Please do the moves if you know what I’m talking about—and if you don’t, all you gotta worry about is riding to the beat. If you do that, you’re going to automatically be really challenged, since I’ve designed this class to include lots of interval training, like HIIT on a bike.

Try to always ride with some tension on your bike. It should be difficult to keep moving your feet to the beat of each song, so adjust accordingly, adding more or taking off resistance as you need.

If you want help with your spin form, read this.

Disclaimer: Please listen to your body, exercise at your own risk, be smart, etc.

If you get confused and want my help, just drop me a Comment at the bottom of this page, or shoot me a DM on Instagram.

Here’s the playlist breakdown, with choreography:

Click here to open the playlist in Spotify.

    • Physical by Dua Lipa: Pulse Elbows Down (towards handlebars)
    • Lil Bit by Nelly + Florida Georgia Line: Fast Figure 8s (move hips towards back of saddle to front)
    • Ice Cream by BLACKPINK + Selena Gomez: Push Elbows Out + Down
    • Ride It by Regard (Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike vs Quintino Remix): Sprints (x2)
    • Check by Qveen Herby: Travels
    • Booty by Jennifer Lopez + Iggy Azalea (Vice Remix): Tapbacks (slightly lean back to tap your booty to the back of your saddle)
    • On Me by Kelechi: Slow Figure 8s
    • Bonfire by Childish Gambino: Push-up Tapbacks
    • The Business by Tiësto: Travels
    • Luxury by Azealia Banks: Sprints (x2)
    • Rain On Me by Lady Gaga + Ariana Grande (Purple Disco Machine Remix): Weights
    • I Am by Yung Baby Tate feat. Flo Milli: Your Choice (do whatever you want)
    • Lose Control by MEDUZA, Becky Hill + Goodboys: Sprints (x2)
    • I’m Dope by Tobe Nwigwe feat. David Michael Wyatt – Cool-down Stretch

Note: For the Weights section, stay seated on your bike, grab a pair of light hand weights (3 – 5 lbs) and do some arm work. Biceps curls, shoulder presses, etc. Or, just ride.

It’s your workout. Play around and make it work for you!

I hope this Spring 2021 Spin Playlist helps you all stay sane during the continued pandemic lockdowns!

I wanted to give you a fresh alternative to streaming from studios online, or good ol’ Peloton, especially since we’ve gone so long now doing the same home routine. Sometimes it’s nice to guide yourself through your own workout, without any distractions. Just great music and the bike.

Working out has always been as much about mental exercise as physical for me, and I hope that through a fun workout you can discover the stress-relieving benefits of cardio, too. Raising your heart strengthens it, and helps your entire system to process any unaddressed emotions. The best part about working out at home, by yourself, is you can give yourself the space to work through whatever you need. Let your bike become a place of sanctuary, of moving meditation—like being on your mat in yoga.

The songs in my Spring 2021 Spin Playlist are a mix of upbeat pop, EDM, and hip hop that I’m loving lately, including tons of the latest hits with some older gems sprinkled in. It’s a great playlist to use for any workout, or to get pumped up in general!

Be sure to share this with any friends who could use a new workout. And let me know if you find this helpful and want me to keep sharing more!

    Happy spinning.

What songs should I put in my next spin playlist? I’m putting it together—Share your current favorite songs with me in the Comments below!

  • List of Socially-Distanced Outdoor Workout Classes in Los Angeles

    Los Angeles Outdoor Workout Speir

    » Speir Pilates «

Tired of at-home workouts? Try one of these socially-distanced outdoor workout classes in Los Angeles!

If you’ve been going a little stir-crazy after 6+ months of COVID-19, or are feeling like it’s hard to keep your motivation up to exercise at home, you’re not alone. But luckily if you’re located in sunny Southern California, you can now try outdoor workout classes!

Los Angeles is currently unable to host indoor classes due to pandemic restrictions, so studios and trainers have pivoted to offer safer outdoor workout options instead, taking their classes to the city’s parks and rooftops.

I was inspired to put this master list together after my friend Arielle Berneman did one for her blog Sweat in SD. If you’re in San Diego, click here for her list of SD outdoor workout classes!

Although I usually call San Diego home, I’m currently living in Los Angeles again during the pandemic. And after doing some research, I realized I couldn’t find a similar comprehensive list of socially-distanced outdoor workout classes being offered in LA.

So here it is! Big thanks to everyone who helped me put this together.

Doing an outdoor workout is a great way to get the class experience without the fear.

I miss teaching in person, and going to fitness classes. I know you do, too. And working out is incredibly important, now more than ever. Exercise boosts your immunity, strengthens your body, and can help with mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

Gyms, studios, and trainers have all been hit hard by the effects of the coronavirus. If you’re able, keep supporting your favorite trainers by taking their classes, whether virtually or in person at one of the spots listed below. (I offer my Meditation and Yoga classes online and on YouTube, and hope to start teaching in LA soon!)

When you go to an outdoor workout class, you’ll be able to keep a safe 6 ft+ distance from others, get some fresh air, and feel more connected. The CDC has recommended doing activities outside because the open air keeps virus-containing particles moving away from you.

And don’t forget that just being outside has health benefits, too!

I’ve been doing my daily yoga practice in our backyard each morning to help break up the monotony of being home all day, and to get some time with nature, which has also been proven to boost your health and mood.

I actually really prefer exercising outside (teaching beach yoga over the years has spoiled me), so I think getting to do our favorite studio workouts in the open air is a real treat!

For this list, I grouped all the outdoor workout classes below by rough location throughout Los Angeles, then by alphabetical order. LA’s huge, so this list covers mostly just the main city area, from Downtown to Sherman Oaks to Redondo Beach-ish.

Happily, traffic isn’t nearly as bad as usual in LA right now (maybe the one bright spot of COVID?), and getting in a workout is definitely worth a short drive!

A few things you need to know:

    • This list is up to date as of Jan 7, 2021, but of course things are constantly changing. The best way to get the most recent info is most likely the studio’s Instagram, or their websites linked below.
    • Yes, you’ll still need to wear a mask. At this time, I believe you also still have to wear a face covering during the actual workout, but that may change.
    • I know it’s obvious, but I just want to reiterate: all of the classes listed below are OUTDOORS, so bring sun protection like sunscreen, hat, and a jacket. Take care of your pretty skin.
    • I highly recommend Bluestone Sunshield’s face visors–they offer 99% UVA/UVB protection and are way more comfortable than a mask to wear during workouts that require you to continue to wear a face covering—win/win. They even have a new clear shield with UV protection! Use the code Sunshield15 for 15% off. I’m not affiliated with them in any way, just a super fan.
    • Also, bring water. And remember to keep your social distance from your fellow workout buddies.

    Have fun!

  • My Favorite Sustainable Activewear Brands

Best Sustainable Activewear » From the Infinite Embers blog

Want to help the planet? Choose sustainable activewear!

All the activewear featured the collage above is all eco-friendly and made out of recycled materials, proving that you don’t have to sacrifice fashion for sustainability. I’m super passionate about the environment—I believe the health of our planet is directly linked to OUR health. After all… if the earth is poisoned, then the plants that grow in it become sick, and then the animals that eat those will become sick—including us. It just trickles up the chain. But the good news is that small changes can make a huge trickle-down impact as well: like where you choose to buy your leggings. Sustainable activewear is the next cool trend, merging fashionable clothing with a commitment to clean up our planet.

Unfortunately, the fashion industry is one of the worst current destroyers of our planet.

In fact, it’s the second-largest polluter in the world. These four sustainable activewear companies have chosen to fight this problem. All the ones featured below use post-consumer recycled materials to create their clothes. among other green practices. They turn trash like plastic water bottles into super cute and high-performance activewear in the form of recycled polyester! Plastic bottles can take 400 years to fully biodegrade when thrown away. (Don’t worry—these brands always make sure there is no BPA or toxins in the materials they use.)

As a full-time yoga and former fitness instructor, I’ve tried just about every brand of activewear out there to put their clothes to the test. I’m always in search of activewear that’s stylish, form-flattering, and can hold up through a lot of wear and tear (and sweat). I also tend to like a little compression, which adds a flattering lift to your booty.

And the great thing is, these sustainable activewear brands hold up against their less-earth-friendly competitors!

I genuinely love their products—it’s like the fact that they’re helping to save the planet is a beautiful cherry on top. The clothes truly sell themselves.

To show you what I mean, I’ve gone through all of their websites and picked out my top picks in their current designs! I know, you’re welcome—such a hard job, but someone had to do it.

By the way, online shopping is even more fun when you’re choosing brands that are leaving a positive impact on the environment, rather than hurting it.

So, without further ado, here are my…

    Favorite Sustainable Activewear Brands

    Yoga Democracy

Yoga Democracy was my first sustainable activewear love. They even featured me once on their Instagram! That’s where I first came across their leggings—I was drawn in by how cute they were on a fellow yogi, and then when I saw that all of their activewear is made from recycled materials, I had to try them. As you might be, I was skeptical at first. But the leggings I bought quickly became one of my favorites.

The best thing about their leggings is that they’re incredible at wicking away moisture—I used to wear them when I taught spin, which is the ultimate leggings endurance test. And let me tell ya: Yoga Democracy holds up. I’ve owned four pairs of their bottoms so far, two leggings and two crops.

And another major plus: they really hold you UP. Their leggings are slightly compressive, which I LOVE. It gives you a lift and support in all the right areas.

Virtually everything we produce is made from recycled polyester or nylon. We source all of our fabric in Italy from a supplier that even by European standards is ahead of the game when it comes to wastewater treatment and green energy. By sourcing from somewhere with strict labor and health and safety standards already in place we can be sure people as well as the planet are not left short changed.

The process starts with PET bottles being shredded into flakes, which are then converted into pellets and melted down. That material is then spun into new polyester yarn which is used to create the recycled polyester that goes into brands like ours.

Our supplier uses a type of yarn called ECONYL® to produce our nylon. That yarn comes from a process carried out by a company called Aquafil SpA which reforms fishing nets collected from the world’s oceans, carpet fluff and other nylon containing material that would otherwise end up in landfill into new fabric.

    Science is so cool.

    Girlfriend Collective

In terms of quality, it really doesn’t get much better than Girlfriend Collective. Seriously, this brand blows me away. They’re doing everything right. The material of their compression leggings is nice and thick and really well-constructed.

When they first launched a few years back, they did a campaign that I saw on Facebook giving away free leggings. Genius. I got mine (the Compressive High-Rise Legging in Black below—I’m wearing them in the collage at the top of this page) and have been in love since.

I also really love this brand for their INCLUSIVITY. They use a variety of bodies for their models—all ages, races, and sizes! (Girlfriend Collective offers a large range of sizes from XXS-6XL) They are definitely paving the way for the future of sustainable activewear.

As a bonus, when you’re done with your Girlfriend Collective clothes, you can recycle them again with their new ReGirlfriend program! They give you a $15 credit to use on future purchases when you send them your worn out clothing—and the clothes get re-recycled for use #3 (and 4… and 5…). Even still, my leggings still have a few years to go. I have had them for 4 years now, worn them a lot, and they’ve held up incredibly. Like, they still look brand new.

Did I mention Girlfriend Collective provides free shipping on everything you order online? Boom.

  • Behind The Fitness Industry: The Truth About Life As A Fitness Instructor

Truth About Being A Fitness Instructor » From the Infinite Embers blog

Let’s spill the tea on what’s it’s really like to be a fitness instructor for a living.

The life of a fitness instructor can be super alluring. You’re probably picturing someone working out all day, wearing a uniform of sports bras and leggings, drinking lots of smoothies. And, to be fair, you’d be sort of right. A lot of people dream of leaving behind the standard 9-5 career path to share their love of yoga/spin/barre/etc with the world instead. That’s exactly what I did; I left behind a stable, lucrative career working in television writing to launch into the wild wilderness of teaching. I absolutely LOVE it, and wouldn’t go back—it was the right decision for me. But that doesn’t mean it’s an easy path.

Being a fitness instructor or trainer is definitely a dream job. But it’s a dream that can be seriously hard to achieve and maintain, and there are real downsides to it, too, that are often hid behind the curtain.

I would know: I’ve been a fitness instructor for almost 7 years now.

I mean holy crap! These years have gone by so quickly!

I got my start teaching barre in 2012 in Los Angeles. I was a television writers assistant at the time, and I was on hiatus between shows looking for work. I’d always been a fitness nut, and after working the front desk of my favorite barre studio for a while, I decided to take a leap and audition to teach.

My life changed that day! But I didn’t switch to just teaching right away. I wasn’t quite ready to let go of my TV career until I became seriously hurt with a chronic muscle spasm in my right neck/shoulder. Not quite sure how I’d make teaching fitness work as a career, I moved to San Diego and began really focusing on teaching in 2014. I was in constant pain and tension and wanted to learn more about the body so I could heal myself.

Thus, this blog. And I now teach yoga, spin, aerial yoga, and the Lagree method, because I was/am super hungry for knowledge to help myself and others. I’m also currently studying to get my personal training license!

Because I’ve taught so many different methods in the industry, I’ve seen it from all sides. I’ve also taught in traditional gym settings, boutique fitness studios, chains, small businesses, even on the beaches of a Disney resort—you name it, I’ve probably done it.

After all of that, here’s what I know to be true about being a fitness instructor:

Truth About Being A Fitness Instructor » From the Infinite Embers blog

It’s one of the most fun jobs in the world.

Like I said, I absolutely love my career in teaching. For me, there’s no rush quite like when I’m in my element, leading a class.

Now, obviously, it’s a very different experience depending on what and where you’re teaching fitness. I’m covering a pretty wide umbrella here.

Teaching Yin yoga at a small studio is a completely different experience than being a bootcamp instructor at 24 Hour Fitness, which is totally different from teaching spin at someplace like SoulCycle. We’re talking difference in expectations, experience/teaching requirements, perks, and pay. So the first thing I want to stress is that everyone will have very different experiences in their careers as instructors. This is not your standard, climb-the-ladder kind of career.

There is a wide variety of certifications, knowledge, and corresponding pay when it comes to the job of “Fitness Instructor”.

The title “fitness instructor” is a tricky one because it covers such a wide range of possible careers. Typically, boutique studios require a higher standard of instructors than, say, a large chain gym, since their clients are paying for a premium fitness experience. This means instructors need to be the cream of the crop, and the competition for a spot to teach is often fierce.

That is NOT to say that studio instructors are better than the ones at gyms! No no, it all depends on the teacher. But studios will usually pay more—and require more of their instructors in return, including ongoing evaluations and trainings. The requirements for every single fitness location are different, which leads to a wide range of experience in a given field.

Like any career, you have to invest time and (usually) finances for education first. You need to be certified to teach whatever it is you want to teach. Now, some boutique studios will train their instructors in-house and cover the costs. This was actually how I got into barre. I did the studio’s training, and fortunately did not have to pay for it. Same with my first spin studio. But that’s really rare; most types of teaching require you to have an outside source of education before you can start to look for jobs.

The different possible certifications also (you guessed it) vary widely. You can be certified to teach spin in an afternoon or go through months of training at a studio. Education among instructors varies widely and isn’t really standardized. (Just fyi, personal training is its own thing and I’m not really talking about it in this post)

To become a great instructor, you must a) teach, over and over and over again and b) seek out knowledge and continuing education constantly. (among other things)

Being a fitness instructor usually requires entrepreneurship.

This is actually one of the most appealing parts of this career to me… but it might really deter a lot of people, because I’m telling you now, this line of work is a HUSTLE. A lot of what you get out of this career comes from what you put in it.

In order to teach fitness full-time, you often have to get creative to make a living. This might mean branching into training private clients or creating classes of your own. It’s really hard to say how much you can make as a fitness instructor, because honestly the sky’s the limit. There’s a big range, which I’ll talk about in a bit. But either way, you usually need to come up with multiple revenue streams in order to create a thriving standard of living for yourself.

Depending on where you teach, as an instructor you’re almost always working freelance, as an independent contractor. You own your own business. What’s more:

    You ARE your own business.

Gaining a client following is critical, so it’s helpful if you’re naturally outgoing. You have to market yourself and sell yourself constantly without making it feel like you are. Of course, I find that the best instructors really get to know their clients and connect with them, so that this happens more effortlessly. That’s the best part of the job—my clients are my friends! I feel like authenticity always leads to success.

But this was a big challenge for me in the beginning—I was introverted, insecure. It wasn’t until I found myself and my confidence that my fitness career really started to take off. Teaching helped: it forced me to get out of my own head and out of my own way!

Side note: instructors also need to remember that you won’t connect with everyone, you won’t make everyone happy, and you can’t take it personally.

An active Instagram account/social media presence in this era is KEY to helping fitness instructors stay in touch with clients outside of class. It’s also the best way to keep them up to date on your schedule. I really love Instagram for that reason—it’s where most of my clients choose to contact me (slide into my DMs, y’all!) and gives me a platform to promote events.

Because you and your personal brand are your livelihood, you have to be adept at wearing multiple hats.

There’s a big difference between loving fitness and teaching it.

This is probably one of the most important things I’d like to get across—just because you love working out does not mean you’ll love teaching, because they’re two totally different experiences. A good teacher should have their attention on the clients at all time, not themselves and their own workout!

To be fair, I mean, with spin, yes, you do the workout with your clients. (And you better be doing it at 150% if you’re asking them for 100%.) Same goes for cardio dance/things like Zumba where participants follow the instructor’s body movements. But even then, as the instructor, you aren’t thinking about getting in your workout for the day. You’re working. And I mean working.

Fitness instructors have to be masters of multitasking.

Remembering your class plan, giving cues (and making them good cues), staying on time, watching clients’ form, demonstrating the moves (with perfect form!), managing music/lights/AC… You gotta be a multitasking pro to succeed.

There’s also a huge performance aspect to teaching: you’re up in front of a crowd of people, with everyone watching you. Your movements must be precise and your personality must be engaging. I used to do dance performances and competitions, and every single time I teach it still feels the same way as stepping out on a stage.

My secret way to get in the right headspace before teaching is to go into the bathroom and take a Power Pose stance, close my eyes, and breathe. A mini meditation. Because once class starts, it’s not stopping! And no matter what happens in class, you’ve got to be able to roll with it—your music might stop playing, the A/C could go out, you’ll have to kindly ask clients to stop talking (please don’t talk in class, people!)… You must be able to be present, focused, and adaptable.

Being a fitness instructor requires a lot of physical and mental energy.

The pressure to be ON can get overwhelming. You know how you have those days where you don’t feel so great and don’t want to work out? Yeah, we have those days, too, but as the instructor you often don’t have a choice—you have to bring your A game, every time. The job requires major stamina.

There can be a negative pressure in that regard to push yourself too far, because if you don’t teach, you won’t get paid, and many instructors work themselves to exhaustion. It’s easy to forget to give to ourselves, too. I’ve made that mistake time and time again, but am now better about taking breaks whenever I need to preserve my energy.

Oh, and because we’re independent contractors? The job doesn’t come with health insurance. Which makes taking care of our bodies even MORE important: we must practice what we preach and live healthfully, including taking time to rest.

Now, even though you’re not exactly working out, teaching IS physical. Demo’ing moves can be very demanding on your body when done in excess over time. This is another thing I had to learn—to teach more with my words instead of my body. Fitness instructors have to be very smart about recovery. That means being sure to find time for stretching, foam rolling, cupping, massages, acupuncture, Epsom salt baths, etc. You’re usually sore, because you’re likely doing your own workouts later in the day too, since teaching doesn’t count.

Another physical challenge that’s not super obvious is that the job involves a lot of talking.

Like, sometimes nonstop-for-hours-at-a-time talking. Hopefully, with a mic. But not always, especially in yoga. And you have to project, so people can hear you, and enunciate clearly, so everyone can understand you. Plus, there’s the whole thinking-about-WHAT-to-say bit, which is its own teaching challenge. Effective cueing is an art.

I manage all that talking with throat coat tea and honey every night. Instructors have to learn how to control your voice as an instrument, like a singer. I have a very distinct “teaching voice”—what my friends have dubbed my “sex phone operator voice” (lol) because it’s a bit lower than my usual tone, smoother, and easier on my vocal cords.

Instructors must be prepared to receive constant feedback.

Fitness instructors are subject to constant critique. From ClassPass ratings to fellow instructors who take your class to Yelp reviews to chatter in the locker room—people are going to talk about you and your class. (One of the things I hear the most is “I love your voice” haha! so that lower range appears to be working)

What’s ironic is that feedback terrified me before I started teaching. As a writer, I was so hurt whenever someone thought my words were less than perfect (um, slow down there with the ego, Past Amy). I often think back and know that my soul gravitated towards teaching because I needed to get over that fear and lack of confidence in order to reach a happier state of being. Because I have!

Of course, it’s wonderful when the feedback is positive, but everyone will have different experiences. It’s a lot of pressure for new instructors, because you’re evaluated right out the gate. But as with anything, practice, experience, dedication, and a little sweat leads to leveling up, and clients notice!

Ideally, you refine your craft enough as an instructor that clients love you and you naturally build a following based off the quality of your teaching.

One of the best parts about teaching: we get to help people get healthier!

To me, there’s nothing more fulfilling than knowing I helped someone feel stronger, get in a good workout, let go of stress, and reconnect with their own power. It’s an honor to be in that position of influence as an instructor. We get to make the world a healthier place!

I like to think of myself as a Trainer/Spiritual Guide/DJ/Hype Man. Literally my ideal job description.

Teaching is incredibly rewarding. You get to make an impact and help people feel better in their bodies.

Truth About Being A Fitness Instructor » From the Infinite Embers blog

The pay is… usually not what it should be.

Well, like I said, this career is best approached from an entrepreneurial mindset. A lot of instructors try to make a living off of just teaching studio or gym classes. This means they’ll teach 10-20 classes a week (exhausting) and are subject to whatever the studios and gyms pay.

I’ll be honest guys, they usually don’t pay great. Now like I said, there’s a WIDE range of possibilities here, so if you’re reading this because you’re thinking about trying to teach full-time, don’t get discouraged. That said, I strongly believe there’s a big problem in this industry with instructors being underpaid.

You want to know how much an instructor can make? Well, if you’re teaching at a studio or gym, you’re probably looking in the $20/25 range per class to start, maybe making up to $50/class with experience/if your classes fill up. This goes for almost everything I’ve taught; they all hover in that range.

The problem is that most people choose to approach teaching fitness as a hobby, or side hustle… to them the money doesn’t matter as much, so there are always plenty of instructors willing to work for less. This has devalued experienced instructors in the fitness industry and led to these low rates.

Let’s do some math: $30 x 20 = $600/week (yikes). To teach 20 classes you have to do almost 3 a day, or more if you want any days off. They may be 1 hour classes, but the prep work time adds up (which I discuss below) and you’ll usually be driving from one class to the next since it’s hard to find open time slots, let alone blocks of three, at any given gym. So it’s a full day of work.

Most fitness instructors supplement their teaching gigs with some other job. It’s challenging to branch out into full-time. I’ve found spin at boutique studios pays much more than anything else. Every studio can pay whatever they choose, so again, it’s very hard to give an exact number, no matter what fitness specialty we’re talking about. But in the past I’ve made a max of $150 for a single spin class, which is the highest per-class rate I’ve personally seen. (some bigger companies like SoulCycle even offer full-time positions to their instructors, benefits and all, but those are extremely rare)

Some studios offer opportunities to grow within their field: you might be able to become a studio manager (or owner!), or become a lead instructor training incoming teachers, or something else if you work for a franchise. That’s another way many instructors choose to take their career to the next level.

There’s quite a bit of prep work involved in each class.

First, there’s the actual workout plan. What you’re going to teach. You need to have solid knowledge of the body in order to build out an effective and safe workout. And then you have to memorize it. More experienced fitness instructors, depending on what they’re teaching, might be able to teach a class on the fly. I do this sometimes, to be honest. But it’s never as good as a planned class and I don’t recommend it.

Unless the music is supplied to you, you also have to create a playlist. Again, one of my favorite parts of the job! But it does take some work to find the right songs to set the mood for each class and then update it continually so clients don’t get sick of hearing the same songs. All told, you can spend up to a couple of hours prepping each class.

Real growth comes from embracing the personal business aspect of instructing.

Many instructors branch out into getting private clients, teaching workshops, and creating workout styles of their own. Those are just the obvious ideas: instructors can become as big as Tracy Anderson if they want!

When you think about it, teaching fitness can potentially have an expiration date. I’ve chosen to put my focus primarily into teaching yoga for this reason, because I can see myself teaching yoga at age 50, but definitely not spin. So it’s smarter to set your future self up for success and build a path for your teaching that you’ll be able to sustain for the years to come.

Real talk, guys: I’m not there yet.

This is my ultimate goal, of course, but I’ll be honest, guys: I don’t make enough from teaching to do it full-time now that I’ve separated from my husband. I do freelance social media work to pay rent, and am currently brainstorming ways to increase my income and build out my own business.

I’ve been thinking about the fitness industry for a while now, the career path of the instructor, and how to make a living from it, which is why I decided to write this post!

    The hustle never stops.

Fitness instructors really are superstars. It’s a tough job, and they do it! Even though it’s challenging, it’s one of the most fun, exciting, energizing careers out there. Obviously I love teaching and have chosen to stay on this path for a reason. It’s addicting. There is nothing that compares to the high you get after teaching a great class.

If you’re passionate about fitness and want to dive all-in to making your dream teaching career come true, you can absolutely do it. Just know it will take work. (But don’t all of the best things in life?)

As with any entrepreneurial journey, if you can tough it out and continue to work hard, being a fitness instructor for a living is a dream within reach. It’s a dream I’m committed to, and I’m excited to see how it, along with my blogging career, unfolds over time.

Being a fitness instructor has made me happier than I’ve ever been in my life—it really is a dream job!

Are you considering switching to a job in the fitness industry? Or a current fitness instructor with your own experiences to share? I would love to hear your thoughts about this NOVEL of a blog post in the Comments below!

  • Amp Up Your Workout With These New Spin Playlists

New Spin Playlists » From the Infinite Embers blog

New Spin Playlists » From the Infinite Embers blog

You know what always cheers me up? Making some new spin playlists.

I’m going through a pretty difficult time right now. It’s partly why I haven’t been able to keep up with as much blogging as I’d like — all the stress has made it more challenging to resist my tendency to fall into depression. In happy news, I’m going to be moving back to California very soon (!!) In less happy news, I’m going to miss Hawaii… and my life’s being completely turned upside down. But no matter how sad I get, I know there’s always something that can turn my day around: music. That’s why I haven’t stopped making new spin playlists, and I’m excited to share a bunch of my latest ones with you today.

There’s a reason I’m as passionate about music as I am (and I really LOVE IT). It’s therapy to me. Music has both comforted me in my loneliness and supplied the soundtrack to my happiest days. I think I owe my passion to my mom, who I remember as surrounded by the lightness and joy of music whenever I think of my earliest childhood days. She taught me to love it and educated me on all things Classic Rock.

I don’t play an instrument, and my singing abilities are mediocre, but I can dance. And you know what? You can, too. Seriously. Everyone has a heartbeat right? It’s literally the beat of your life. Rhythm is inside of all of us. You just have to access it.

That’s why I love spin: it’s dancing anyone can do.

Of course, I’ve talked before about the Rhythm-style of spin I love and teach, but you could totally use these new spin playlists for a more traditional-style ride, as well. Rhythm spin just means you move to the beat of the music. It really does feel like you’re dancing.

These new spin playlists are also great to have on in the background for any workout, and they’re wonderful to listen to if you’re just on the hunt for some awesome new music. Use them however you like!

    Just don’t stop the music.

New Spin Playlists » From the Infinite Embers blog

Okay, so I’ve got three new spin playlists to share with you all. They’re SO MUCH FUN. Seriously, I compiled just the best of all the new-release songs from these months. They’ll get you so hyped you won’t even realize you’re working out! (except for all the sweat, of course) I’ve spun to all three playlists many, many times now, and they’re some of my all-time favorites. They’re always a serious ass-kicker, and they never get old. So really, give them a shot!

If you need a reminder about proper spin form, click here. And for reminders about how to get the most out of your workout, whether you’re teaching a class or riding on your own at home, check out my last post on spin playlists. It also has my usual disclosure about working out mindfully so you get only benefit from your movements, not injury.

  • What’s The Most Effective Workout?

What Type Of Workout Should You Do » From the Infinite Embers blog

What Type Of Workout Should You Do » From the Infinite Embers blog

Lean in closer, guys — I’m about to reveal the secret of the most effective workout. Because there really is a trick to exercise that most people don’t know.

I get asked about this all the time, by both experienced fitness junkies and beginners. And I know that right now is when a lot of us are diving into our New Year’s Resolutions. If you’re just starting to develop a workout routine, the amount of options can easily become overwhelming. There are so many different ways to exercise – from Zumba to spin to running to barre. These workouts all promise to get you into shape, melt fat, strengthen + tone muscle, improve mobility, and help you feel great. So how do you know where to invest your time and energy to ensure you get the most effective workout possible every time you exercise?

Let’s get one quick thing out of the way:

Any form of movement is going to be beneficial.

Well, okay, obviously certain movements can and do hurt your body — like, don’t throw yourself against a wall. I’m using common sense here and expect that you are, too — along with a certain level of mindfulness. If you’re just beginning to work out, I highly encourage you to get help from a personal trainer for a few sessions, or invest in some form of private lessons. Or attend group classes with knowledgable instructors, so that you can learn proper alignment and how to work out correctly. In the very least, watch some tutorial videos on YouTube (like on my channel).

Exercises can hurt you if not performed correctly, so if you’re ever not sure about something, ask! (You can always comment or reach out to me on social media for help.)

(Quick side note: Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of Crossfit because the potential for injury is pretty high — but that’s a rant for another time. If you happen to love Crossfit and do the exercises correctly, you can definitely gain a lot of strength… just be cautious.)

But first and foremost, know that if you’re doing some kind of physical activity, you’re doing your body good. We’re born to move. We aren’t meant to sit stationary at our desks and chairs and couches all day, as most of us do. The human body is designed to perform all sorts of movements, and it functions best when it gets the chance to show off all the cool things it can do.

What Type Of Workout Should You Do » From the Infinite Embers blog

You should be moving every single day.

This is step one. Get some form of movement in. Every. Goddamn. Day. Make sure at least one day a week is very light movement (like yoga) to give your body a break, but the first goal here is just to make movement a more natural part of your routine overall. The most effective workout is one that actually happens, after all.

Don’t give me any excuses about not having enough time – 5 minutes of jumping jacks is enough to get your heart rate up and can be done during the commercial breaks when you’re watching Hulu. Obviously, I think your body is worth a little more time than that, so I recommend at least 15 minutes of sustained activity every day, even if it’s a simple walk during your lunch break. That’s a great place to start. Enter a workout schedule for the week into your calendar every Sunday and commit to those times like you would any other appointment.

Okay, so the first step to finding your most effective workout routine is committing to it. But if you’re still not sure what to do, here’s the short answer:

Do whatever workout you actually enjoy.

What Type Of Workout Should You Do » From the Infinite Embers blog

Seriously. If you find some sort of activity that feels fun, you’ll be way more likely to stick to it.

So think about what motivates you: If you like making friends and meeting people outside of work, join a soccer league. If you love to shake it at the club, enroll in a dance class. If you’re super competitive, head to Orange Theory. You get the idea.

Just find something that doesn’t feel like suffering. If there are moments where you aren’t thinking about the workout at all, and you’re just having a good time, then you’ve found your very own ideal fitness match.

Granted, there will still be moments of suffering. Working out is about pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, which can be, well — uncomfortable. You just need to not hate it, you know? And extra bonus points if you find you really like it. Remember that working out gets better and more enjoyable the more you do it, so stick with it.

But what if you’re working out regularly and still not seeing results?

Like I said above, I frequently get asked about this by many people who already have a steady exercise routine but feel like they’re hitting a plateau in their fitness. I was this person, once. In college my main form of exercise was to run for 30 min, do ab work, and stretch. I did this every day. And yet, I was, well… really weak.

Working out more is not the solution, by the way. Taking double spin classes or running from barre to yoga to Pilates class every single day is a recipe for burnout and possibly a disordered addiction to exercise. As a fitness instructor, I have to work out a lot. I’m totally a crazy person and love it and my ideal day involves me being very active… but I’ve found that in those stretches of times where I worked out the most, I was actually my physically weakest. At a certain point your body starts to compensates for all that extra wear and tear and it just leads to injury and illness.

Work smarter, my friends, not harder.

What Type Of Workout Should You Do » From the Infinite Embers blog

So here’s what you’ve really been waiting to hear. If you want to get even more out of your workouts, let me tell you the secret to ideal fitness:

If you’re really serious about getting results, the most effective workout routine includes 3 things: cardio + strength training + some form of active recovery.

Yes, you need all them. Consider it the Holy Trinity of Fitness.

In all likelihood, you’re not getting the right balance of these three workouts. For most people, the real problem is cardio (which, FYI, is exercise that increases your heart rate for an extended period of time). It makes you sweaty and uncomfortable in ways strength training just doesn’t. But I promise you can do it — it just comes down to finding a type of cardiovascular movement that works for you.

It’s also super common for people to only do cardio and neglect strength training — and most people don’t even think about recovery. But you need to stretch, do some yoga, foam roll, etc ideally every day to let your body get the most benefits from the cardio and/or strength training you do.

You can do cardio and strength training all in one day, but I generally prefer to alternate them and double up once in a while to shake my body into high gear. I also make sure to do some kind of yoga every day.

Cardio + Strength Training are both important components of the most effective workout regimen because they challenge your body differently.

    The Low-Down on Cardio

    » Helps you live longer

» More effective at burning fat

» Can help raise good cholesterol + lower your bad cholesterol

    » Improves your immune system

    » Can help reducing stress

    The Low-Down on Strength Training

    » Helps prevent injuries

» Improves functional strength and mobility

» Evens out imbalances in the body

» Makes you better at your cardio of choice

» This is pure vanity, but we tend to like the look of toned muscles

I mean, I don’t know about you, but I say why do only one when you can get all the benefits listed above?!

Do them on different days or combine them for a killer workout (do your strength training first and you’ll burn more calories during your cardio) — whatever keeps you committed to your workout routine.

What Type Of Workout Should You Do » From the Infinite Embers blog

Also – keep things spicy and mix up your workouts as often as you can.

You guys know that for cardio I personally love spin (I mean it really is the most fun thing I do), and before that I was a longtime dancer and runner, as I mentioned above. But the cardio I dread? Swimming. I suck at it, and I gulp water while gasping for air, and the pool chlorine makes my skin itch. But I still do it from time to time, just to test my upper back strength and to shake my body out of its comfort zone.

Every time you push yourself out of that comfort zone, you grow. The most effective workout routine is one that involves variety, commitment, and focus. With time, you’ll find that you grow stronger not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, too, as you prove to yourself just how strong you really are

Aim to move and push yourself whenever you can, and you’ll get your body into the best shape possible.

What’s your favorite type of workout? Any workouts you hate (seriously I’m just the worst at swimming)? Share with me in the comments!

  • Two Fall Spin Playlists Coming Atcha

    Free Spin Playlists + Choreography

Fall Spin Playlists » From the Infinite Embers blog

Need to spruce up your workout? Try one of these spin playlists!

If the idea of a spin workout right now makes you roll your eyes and think “yeah, right,” I get it. Now that we’re deep into the holiday season, I know it’s super easy to start to let your own health and self-care fall waaaaaay off the priority checklist. I mean, there’s so much to do, it’s cold, it’s dark at like 4 pm (although one of the best parts about being near the equator is that we avoid those short days here in Hawaii — just needed to rub that in for a sec), and basically everyone’s shoving cookies at you. But it’s up to you to remember that you have to put yourself first.

Make working out a non-negotiable item on your to-do list. Block off whatever time you need in your calendar and make sure you stick to it like you would any other appointment. I don’t know about you, but the shorter days always make me depressed as hell, and I promise that working out will help shake you out of that funk.

When working out is the last thing you want to do, it’s usually the thing you need to do the most.

Seriously. Here’s a little trick for the days when you feel the least motivated: make a deal with yourself that you’ll work out for just 15 minutes. That’s it. And even if you start out silently cursing and feeling like you’re made of lead, by the end of those 15 minutes I promise you’ll be powered up and wanting more. But don’t take my word for it — just do it and see for yourself! And I’m pretty much positive that if you do 15 min of spin specifically, you’ll end up doing the entire class.

The best part about these spin playlists is that they make working out super time-efficient. In just 45 minutes you’ll get your ass handed to you (in the best, endorphin-flooding, spirit-lifting way possible) along with some heart-healthy cardio and even a sprinkling of upper-body strength-training. The time speeds by because you’re basically just dancing and jamming to some awesome (in my opinion, anyway) music. And then you’re done for the day! In less than an hour!

    Talk about no excuses.

Let’s talk about the latest spin playlists I made for you guys.

Well, I made them for myself (and Matt), too, if I’m being honest. You see, there aren’t any spin studios on Oahu yet (anyone want to open one? let’s talk), so I currently only get to teach spin when I’m visiting back home in San Diego. I miss it every day. BUT I make do by rocking out solo on the spin bike I bought off Craigslist. It’s actually an amazing time to go internal, turn up the volume on my home speakers, and just have fun. It feels more like therapy or meditation than a workout.

These spin playlists are for my fellow independent workout warriors. Or, you know, just anyone looking for some badass new music.

In case you missed it, be sure to check out my September 2017 spin playlists, too! And don’t worry, if you guys like them, I’ll keep the playlists coming. I mean, I’m always building one at any given moment, so whenever you want to discover some new music, I’m your gal. Be sure to follow me on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, where I like to share all the new tunes I’m currently rocking out to. The November playlist has the song “Lemon” in it, which is my current fave. I think I annoy my husband with how much I play it. Haha

If you’re a fellow spin instructor, I hope these spin playlists give you some inspiration for your classes! And if you don’t go to spin class and want a cheaper + more convenient option, you can do these workouts on any spin bike — most gyms have at least one tucked away somewhere for you to use, so make sure to ask if you’re not sure if you have access to one!

How To Do These Spin Workouts

    • Ride to the beat of the music. If you can’t find the beat (and that’s ok, you’ll gain the musicality with practice), just do your best. If you can’t figure something out, reach out to me and I’ll walk you through it. (Really!)
    • Use as much resistance as you can handle. Keeping the beat of the song should feel challenging, but not impossible. You definitely don’t want to be going too fast — when in doubt, slower with more resistance is better.
    • Always have at least 2 turns of resistance on your bike.
    • Do the moves listed below during the chorus of the songs. Most have a pretty obvious beat drop, but it might be easier if you listen to the songs beforehand just so you’re kind of familiar with them. Or, you know, just do the moves whenever the spirit moves you.
    • Listen to your body and do as much as you can, with wherever you’re at today. Remember you’re responsible for your own health + safety, and consult your doctor before beginning any workout regimen.
    • Watch your form!!!
