  • Where To Find Outdoor Yoga in San Diego in 2022

Outdoor Yoga in San Diego Pinterest

    Outdoor Yoga San Diego

Photo by The Livewell Media Co for Amy Baack (that’s me!)

In Southern California, we’re lucky to have warm, sunny days nearly year-round—the perfect setting to find Outdoor Yoga in San Diego!

San Diego is known for being a super active, outdoorsy city, with tons of beautiful parks, beaches, and other natural settings. And now that Covid is also a high concern, outdoor yoga in San Diego is becoming more popular than ever. There are tons of options throughout the city, and with nearly 365 days of perfect weather it’s almost always a good day to take your practice outside!

I know this firsthand, because I actually teach a popular public Outdoor Yoga class in San Diego myself, at Sunset Cliffs (see details below to join!). We’re so blessed here to have that option, even in winter months. Doing Yoga also outside takes the practice to a whole other level—you’ll find it’s even easier to feel more grounded and centered while being out in nature. The health benefits of being outside along with doing yoga easily makes this a must-do activity, whether you live in San Diego or are visiting!

To have the best experience possible, don’t forget to bring these important items with you to your Outdoor Yoga Class:

    • Yoga mat
    • Towel to put underneath your mat (esp. for sandy/dusty situations)
    • Sunscreen
    • Hat or a visor
    • A jacket (in case it turns chilly—you’ll want to stay warm during Savasana!)
    • Water
    • Towel for sweat

And here’s how to clean your mat when you’re done!

Now that you’re prepped and ready to go, let’s get to the list of class options…

Where to find Outdoor Yoga in San Diego in 2022:

I’ve searched all over and reached out to my network of yogis here in San Diego to come up with the most comprehensive list of all the Yoga Teachers and Studios who are currently offering Outdoor Yoga in San Diego in 2022.

As a yoga teacher myself, you might think it’s weird that I’m promoting other options besides my own. But I believe in collaboration over competition—the more access to yoga the better, right? When one succeeds, we all do. If you want to practice with me, you can join me at Sunset Cliffs (listed below), or click here to work with me online or for a private session.

I divided the options into two categories: Donation classes offered by independent teachers, and Studios that have outdoor studio spaces. I’ll continue to update this list as I learn of more options. Be sure to let me know anything I missed in the Comments section at the end of this post!

Donation Outdoor Yoga in San Diego

On a budget? San Diego’s got your back with plenty of Donation classes that are open to the public. It’s okay if you can’t pay—you’re always welcome at these classes (just bring good vibes and help support the teacher by telling others about the class). Most teachers have a suggested donation, so be sure to ask if you’re unsure, and bring cash. Every donation is welcome and helps support the teacher to keep the class going!

  • The Top 7 Must-Have Yoga Teacher Tools For A Successful Live Group Class

    Yoga Teacher Tools

Being a yoga teacher is one of the most fulfilling careers out there—and I’ve found the best tools to help you teach a successful live Group Class!

Teaching yoga for a living is, well, awesome. You get to do what you love while helping people create positive change in their lives! And with the right yoga teacher tools, you can build a whole career out of teaching on your own.

One of the best ways to get started as a new teacher is by teaching at yoga studios, where you can build a client following and learn from fellow teachers. But to be honest, it’s rarely possible to make a living teaching just at studios full-time, since they often pay a (low) flat rate to teach. Trust me: I tried it for a few years earlier in my career making around $30 a class, and it led to burnout.

To really teach yoga full-time, you have to build your own business.

This is definitely challenging, but it’s also even more rewarding. You become not just a yoga teacher, but a full entrepreneur, running a business of the brand that is you and your style of teaching. And you get to manage the finances rather than depending on a paycheck from a studio. The more clients you can attract, especially with Group Classes, the more money you can make. And you set your rates! That’s what makes being a fitnesspreneur so exciting—you can build and grow a career doing exactly what you want, as your own boss!

You can also get really creative about what you want your work life to look like: you can teach Private sessions, teach over Zoom (which I do), or lead group classes in spaces like public parks (with a permit, depending on where it is) or rented spaces.

I’ve been teaching since 2012, and these are the best yoga teacher tools I’ve found for a top-quality class.

One big benefit with teaching at a studio is that you have access to all their professional equipment. But it just takes a few key investments to be able to teach high-quality classes on your own! These reliable tools won’t let you down and will help you deliver a professional class with no distractions.

    Yoga Teacher Tools

    1. Speaker

If you use music in your yoga classes, a good speaker is KEY. The ION Block Rocker Plus (about $230—pictured above is an older model) produces powerful, loud, clear, high-quality sound, and it has wheels and a handle for easy transport! I love music and am a little bit of a self-proclaimed sound-quality snob, so trust me when I say this speaker delivers. It is a little bit of an investment, but mine has lasted for years.

    2. Microphone

I’ve tried a few different microphones, and this one from Winbridge (about $40, pictured at the top of this page) is my favorite for a few reasons: it stays put, doesn’t give a ton of screechy feedback, and has a decent range (so you can walk around). It works great with the ION Block Rocker Plus or any speaker that has a MIC in input hole (it’s not Bluetooth).

    Yoga Teacher Tools

    3. Voice Amplifier

If you don’t plan to use music, a really simple and awesome mic option is this MAONO Voice Amplifier (about $35). It’s a mic and speaker in one! The sound comes out of this cute speaker box that you can either clip to your waistband, or you can use the belt provided. The sound quality is loud and clear with minimal feedback, and it’s an even easier option than using a whole speaker setup for just a mic. I use this to teach my weekly classes in San Diego at Sunset Cliffs and it’s strong enough to project out to a group of 30+ people.

    4. Mini Speaker

On the flip side, if you want to use a speaker but not necessarily a mic, the best small speaker I’ve ever found is the UE Boom (about $150). It’s only about 7 inches long and weighs less than 2 pounds, which means you can easily throw it in your backpack or gym back to bring around town to teach. It’s even waterproof and virtually indestructible! And the sound quality is the BEST. I use this to play music at home and it’s just so good.

    5. ThoughtFulls Cards

A great way to build your business is by giving your clients a special gift they can take home with them that has your contact information! These ThoughtFulls Cards (about $30 for a four pack, 120 total cards) are absolutely perfect. They pop open to reveal a secret inspirational quote, and every card is different, so it’s really exciting for people to open them and share their quotes with each other or on social media. There’s also blank lines on the back of the cards for you to write information. You can share your website or Instagram handle like a business card so your clients have the information they need to work with you further!

    6. Essential Oil Spray

Nothing helps set the mood for a yummy yoga class like a good scent! I do recommend only using this in small group situations where you can ask if everyone is okay with you using it, as some people have allergies or are especially sensitive to smells. But if everyone is down for some essential oils, there is no better-smelling spray than Live with Moxy’s Lady Magic New Moon Mist ($15). It smells like vanilla, citrus, and black pepper and is infused with crystals and herbs for some special magic. It’s from a small business and only available direct from their website, but trust me it’s so, so worth it. It’s sweet and bright and energetic, and a rejuvenating crowd pleaser.

    7. Journal for Mailing List Sign-Ups

Like the ThoughtFulls Cards, another way to get clients to come back and work with you again, it’s a great idea to have a place to collect their email addresses for your mailing list. Your mailing list is KEY to being able to communicate with your clients and share all that you’re offering. It’s probably your most valuable asset as a yoga teacher! Any cute notebook will do, but this glitter pink Ban.do one is my favorite. Be sure to mention it at the end of all your classes to help build up your client list.

With the right yoga teacher tools, all you have to worry about is teaching the best group class you can!

Let me know if you try any of these out, and what you think!

  • Happy International Yoga Day 2021

This is a reminder that yoga really is for all people. It’s for all bodies, all ages, all abilities.

There’s a lot of exclusivity in mainstream yoga. Social media and magazines are flooded with photos of hyper-mobile models twisting into unattainable shapes.

(This pose looks cool but is a pretty basic forward fold—I’m not super flexible and used to try to push myself to do more, which isn’t healthy and isn’t yoga.)

Yoga has become white-washed and culturally appropriated in the U.S. It’s is now “trendy” and “cool” in a way that can seem like it’s not for us. Popular classes are full of students and teachers pushing themselves to one-up each other with athletic feats… to what end?

None of that is actually Yoga. Yoga is a practice of diving into and honoring your body, finding the connection between your body/mind/Life itself, and finding healing and peace. All while moving your body in ways that feel good for you. It’s inclusive of all people, and it’s for YOU.

  • 20 Minute Evening Yoga Flow

Sleep better with this free 20 minute Evening Yoga class video!

I’ve heard from a lot of you that sleep is a big issue—you’re not getting enough of it, it’s hard to fall asleep, and the quality’s lacking. But yoga can help! I’ve struggled with sleep my whole life, so I made a free full Evening Yoga class video with my favorite poses to help you slow down from the day and get a better night’s rest.

Not getting enough good quality sleep can really mess with your mood and health. I know because I’ve been there, and it can be so frustrating. For more tips on how to get better sleep, be sure to read this post.

This easy 20 minute class will do a lot to help you relax and unwind so you can get a good night’s sleep. This gentle restorative Hatha style practice is accessible for All Levels, and focuses on gentle mobility and restorative poses to help you unwind from the day.

So much of our day to day stress gets stored as tension in the body. This yoga practice will help you release that tension and active your body’s parasympathetic nervous system, to cue your body to prepare for sleep.

Use this Evening Yoga practice to let go of your day’s stress.

As you go through each pose (“asana”), breathe deeply. Relax your body. This time of stillness may bring up all the stressors of the day—and that’s ok. It’s part of the process. Let yourself feel whatever comes up for you, and try to let the stress flow out of your body as you breathe.

Try to release control over solving any more problems. Trust that tomorrow will be a new day, that sleep will bring you a fresh new start.

Your only responsibility is to relax. Enjoy. Click here to begin.

And be sure to check out my YouTube channel for even more FREE yoga classes and meditations.

I hope you sleep well soon.

  • 20 Minute Morning Yoga Flow Video

Want to start your day off right? Do this gentle 20 minute Morning Yoga Flow class video!

I’ve had a lot more time at home this year (like most of us), so I committed to starting my own short morning yoga practice every day to help keep me on track, emotionally/mentally/and physically. The little steps we take for self-care make a huge difference.

Doing this morning yoga practice has improved how I feel so much that I had to share it with you!

I haven’t been able to do as much with my arms since my chest surgery earlier this year, so this is my first yoga video back. And let me tell ya—it feels great to be teaching again.

This class will loosen up your body and help you get in the right headspace before you tackle your day. The practice is accessible for All Levels, and focuses on gentle mobility and flexibility poses to work through any morning creakiness you may feel. It’s a Hatha style yoga class that covers all your joints, from hips to shoulders. You’ll end feeling taller, looser, and stronger!

Plus, it’s short enough that you won’t feel overwhelmed by adding it to your schedule, or slowed down as you begin your day. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to get myself to actually commit to anything longer, and a 20 minute practice is just right to get the full effects.

If you tend to wake up feeling stiff, this Morning Yoga video is a must!

All you need is yourself, a mat, and maybe some blocks (I always highly recommend!). And perhaps a nice mug of warm lemon water or tea. Do this practice as part of your morning routine, as often as you can. It’s great either before or after a workout, too.

Remember that building a habit takes time and consistency, but doing yoga every day is definitely worth the commitment. You’ll feel more mentally clear and younger in your body!

  • The Ultimate 2020 Holiday Wellness Gift Guide

Not sure what to give your loved ones this holiday season? I’ve got you covered with this 2020 Wellness Gift Guide!

There’s nothing that says I love you quite like the gift of wellness — everyone can benefit from taking care of their health and feeling better inside and out, especially during the holiday season.

November is here, which means it’s time to plan your gift lists for this upcoming Christmas and Hanukkah (and anything else you celebrate). But coming up with new creative ideas for everyone on your list can quickly get overwhelming. Now you don’t need to worry about what to give your Uncle Johnny—these wellness gift ideas will make shopping for everyone a breeze.

I mean, let’s be real—we’ve probably all given enough candles. (I do LOVE candles, but you can only give so many.) This master list has wellness gifts that are unique and special enough to remember, and are things your loved ones will actually use and enjoy.

Growing up, I loved watching Oprah on TV after school with my mom, and in putting together this list I’ve totally channeled her annual Favorite Things. Here are all of the best, chic, and affordable wellness gifts for this holiday season that the people in your life will be super stoked to receive.

I’ve rounded up ALL the best wellness gift ideas in 2020 to fit every budget!

The wellness gift ideas are organized in categories that are just like this site: the best presents for mental health (Mind), physical health (Body), Yoga, and Fitness. Everything is listed by alphabetical order, and you’ll find something for everyone, in each price point.

There are ten gift ideas in each category, for a total of 40 different amazing options. You’ll find gift ideas for as low as $8, and this list covers everyone from your super athlete brother to your grandma.

Also, I highly recommend buying the items below for yourself, too! As the Parks and Rec saying goes: Treat yo self. I actually got most of these ideas based on things I have either been given or have given as gifts myself, so I can vouch that they all are amazing ways to give some self-love (which honestly, I think we could all use a bit more of this year).

Happy holiday season! Let’s dive in to all the best wellness gift ideas of the year:

    Affirmators! Affirmation Card Deck

    • These warm and cheeky cards are a hit with everyone I’ve ever shared them with. Each card has a heart-filled affirmation and illustration that provides self-help advice while also keeping it real. My friend Kelsey gave me this deck as a gift a few years back, and it’s one of my favorite gifts I’ve ever gotten. I’ve used them in my yoga classes, and everyone lights up when they see the cards’ humorous and loving vibe!
    • Buy: $13, Amazon

    Crystals

    • For the spiritual friend in your life, you can’t go wrong with crystals! (They’re my favorite thing to receive.) Crystals are becoming more and more popular, and there are endless types with different sizes and colors to suit any energy. If you’re not sure which crystal to give, I always recommend an Amethyst, or Rose Quartz. Or, go with a gift set, like this beautiful Chakra one! Etsy is my favorite place to shop for all varieties of crystals from independent business owners online.
    • Buy: $3o, Etsy (other crystal prices vary)

    Heart Talk by Cleo Wade

    • This book feels like a hug from a dear friend—so, the perfect gift. Cleo Wade is an incredible writer and artist (I featured her in my Black Wellness Leaders list), and this book is one that is meant to be picked up daily. Every page has a different inspirational poem, story, etc. that offers wisdom for healing and self-love. My friend Jessica gave it to me for my birthday one year, and I’ve since given it to other friends who have adored it as much as I do. I still pick it up from the coffee table any time I need an emotional boost.
    • Buy: $13, Amazon

    Journal

    • A journal is such a good way to reduce stress and process how you’re feeling. Keeping a gratitude journal in particular has been shown to improve mental health (learn more about gratitude journals here!). They’re practical, meaningful, and don’t break the bank—an ideal gift.
    • My favorite options from Amazon:

    Palo Santo

    • Palo Santo is a popular way to cleanse the energy of a space (see Sage below). But most Palo Santo is not sustainably sourced, and its habitat (dry tropical forest) is currently deeply threatened. According to this article from The New York Times, estimates are that only five to ten percent of dry tropical forests are still intact around the world. So make your palo santo gift extra special by buying sustainably sourced Palo Santo that does not contribute to deforestation! I’ve linked my favorite seller below on Etsy, who collects the Palo Santo in Peru from fallen branches and downed trees.
    • Buy: $9, Etsy

    Philips SmartSleep Wake-up Light

    • Sleep has a LOT to do with your mental health, and there is no better way to wake up than with this light, especially on dark winter mornings. The light gradually simulates lighting up your room just like the sun, triggering the correct hormones in your brain to be released to tell your body that it’s morning and time to wake up! By the time light has filled the room (so helpful on early mornings), your chosen natural sound completes the wake up experience, leaving you ready for the day ahead. I use this clock and it’s a game-changer when it comes to starting your day. It’s a much more gentle, natural wakeup than your iPhone blaring at you from under a pillow.
    • Buy: $117, Amazon

    Sage Bundle

    • Sage is a long-practiced tool to practice energy cleansing. But, like Palo Santo, it can be problematic. Sage is often not harvested sustainably, leaving limited resources for the Indigenous Peoples who originated the practice. Read more about sage and cultural appropriation here. The best way to buy sustainably grown Sage is from a Native reservation, and I’ve found an Indigenous seller on Etsy in Wisconsin who creates beautiful Sage bundles that are a perfect gift!
    • Buy: $6+, Etsy

    Self Care Gift Box

    • Give someone the gift of a night off with a relaxing spa-at-home gift set! This beautiful Self Care Gift Box includes a hand-poured soy candle, bath salts, French green clay mask (great for all skin types), lip balm, and a decorative matchbox, all with a personalized gift card. Everything is handmade in Austin, TX with natural ingredients and essential oils. You also get to choose between Lavender or Vanilla Orange scents!
    • Buy: $28 (with free shipping), Etsy

Shortcut to Calm Online Meditation Course

    Shortcut To Calm Meditation Course

    • One of the best gifts you can give someone is a meditation class, since it’s so challenging to learn this practice on your own. I created an at-your-own-pace online course that is a wonderful gift for those who are newer to meditation! It’s a week-long online course to learn how to let go of stress by combining proven meditation and breath techniques. Your friend will get seven different 20 min guided meditation audio downloads, a Basics of Meditation lesson, and special bonus materials! All you need is to sign up, then give your login info to your friend so they can experience this simple-yet-powerful stress-relief practice. Learn more here.

    Untamed by Glennon Doyle

    • Untamed is one of the top bestselling books of 2020 for a reason—it’s amazing. I listened to the audiobook around March while going on long walks outside with my dogs, right after reading Glennon Doyle‘s previous book Love Warrior (the two books as a set is an awesome gift idea if you want to do a little extra). The coronavirus pandemic hit my life hard, and this book is full of loving wisdom that I really needed. Doyle’s raw, beautiful writing aims to empower and show the way for women to fully become themselves.

    Acupressure Mat

    • Acupressure mats are a helpful relaxation tool with powerful healing effects. I wrote all about why they’re amazing here—they’re especially helpful for anyone who struggles with stress, pain, or insomnia. The acupressure mat I have and love is this set from HemingWeigh, which comes with a pillow and its own handy tote bag for easy storage!
    • Buy: $30, Amazon

    Bluestone Sunshields

    • You can learn all about Bluestone Sunshields here, but here’s what you most need to know: they block 99% of UVA/UVB rays and Blue Light and cover your whole face. I got mine a couple years back for the sun protection, but the fact that now face shields are being used as a way to protect against covid outdoors means they’re now doubly special. I actually just broke mine (heartbreak), and a replacement is top of my list this year. Bluestone also has a ton of other visor options, including shorter versions, ones that are clear, and more!

    GreenAir SpaGlow Diffuser

    • Diffusing essential oils can help relax your nervous system and improve immunity, but a clunky old diffuser kind of ruins the spa vibe. The SpaGlow by GreenAir is a rare find, and it reminds me of a crystal ball (you even turn it on by pressing on it with your palm). The sphere lights up in different calming pastel colors. It’s hard to find, but I tracked it down! A great wellness gift set idea would be to pair this with a couple different essential oils. Two that nearly everyone can enjoy are Lavender and Eucalyptus.
    • Buy: $45, Bulk Apothecary

    Heating Pad

    • If you’ve ever had menstrual cramps or back/neck pain, you’ll know that a great heating pad is everything. This beautiful blue XL heating pad is super soft, heats quickly, had an auto-off option, and is perfect for treating sore muscles in your back, shoulders, stomach, legs, and arms. Plus, it keeps you warm! This is an especially great gift idea for those who are older or have an injury.

    • A humidifier makes a huge difference in how you feel, especially for kids or if you have allergies. But’s it’s also one of those things that’s easy to think of as a splurge, making it a great gift (in a range of available price points). I love this one TaoTronics because of its sleek aesthetically-pleasing look and the option to produce either hot or cold steam. You can even add essential oils to it!
    • Buy: $90, Amazon

    Juicer

    wellness gift

    • This wellness gift is a wow moment—and something the recipient will use for years! A juicer is a great easy way to get the nutrients of fruits and vegetables without having to eat a ton of salads. This juicer is better than most because it’s a slow masticating juicer, meaning it grinds the veggies slower and with less heat to preserve all the vitamins, enzymes, and minerals with less foaming and no clogging.

    Magic Wrap

    • The holidays are looking a little different this year. It’s hard to be away from your loved ones—so if you can’t hug your family in person, you can send a hug in the form of this super cozy Magic Wrap! I am obsessed with mine and use it in the cold mornings and to wind down at night. It’s essentially like a soft wearable blanket, and even has pockets! I have to fight my dog Peach over it because she loves to snuggle in it, too—we recommend getting the Cuddle Fleece version.
    • Buy: $38, Magic Wrap (use the promo code EMBERS for 10% off!)

    Massage Pillow

    • Selfishly, I want someone to give me this gift. This massage + heat pillow by Viktor Jurgen is like having your own private masseuse at home. Weighted Blanket

    • A weighted blanket is one of the best tools to help reduce stress and anxiety and ensure your Secret Santa gets a good night’s sleep. 2,100 Asanas: The Complete Yoga Poses Book

    • This is a gorgeous, coffee-table-sized color book that’s a great gift for the yogis in your life. I bought this book for myself when I first did my yoga teacher training—I wanted to have a bible of sorts of all the possible asanas (poses). There is no one master book to that covers all of yoga (since there are many different branches), but this is the closest I’ve found for a master list of asanas, with photos for each. I do wish the models were more diverse, but as a textbook this book is super helpful both to plan classes (for teachers) or to deepen your own yoga practice.

    Glo Online Yoga Class Subscription

    • There’s no better yoga gift than yoga itself! Give yoga classes from the best teachers in the industry with a gift subscription to an online yoga platform like Glo. I’ve learned so much from taking class with the biggest names in yoga (I especially love Sara Clark, Jo Tastula, and Amy Ippoliti [pictured]), and it has everything from Meditations to Yoga Philosophy Classes to Pilates Core workouts. It’s great for someone just starting yoga, or who wants to continue to practice any time, anywhere with Glo’s easy apps and website.

Laure B Paintings Yoga Watercolor Art

    • Omg, I love these paintings. How much? So much that I own three of them. Laure B is a local San Diego watercolor artist, and I fell in love with her work when I saw it for sale in the hallways of Trilogy Sanctuary, where I used to teach. I have a mix of her yoga and aerial yoga prints, and am all about the vibrant rainbow colors! Laure has a wide variety of prints and original paintings for sale on her Etsy store, and I basically want them all.

    Manduka PRO Yoga Mat

    • This is called the PRO yoga mat for a reason—it’s the best of the best. I’ve tried a ton of different yoga mats, from the $7 Walmart variety all the way to this one, and this one from Manduka is a clear winner (different colors available). With a nice thick 6mm cushioning, a grippy surface, and an available extra long length of 85″ (ideal for those who are taller), it makes for a really comfortable yoga practice. It is a bit of an investment, price-wise, but that’s what makes this such a nice gift, and this mat really does stand the test of time. Years and tons of use later, the one I got five years ago looks the same as it did on day one.
    • Buy: $120-146 (free shipping), Manduka

    Mat Carrier

    • There are a lot of different yoga mat bags and carriers out there, but I love this one from Manduka for a couple reasons: It can fit any size mat, from the heavier PRO to thinner ones. It’s more sturdy than the kinds that are just straps. And it has a handy large storage pocket for your valuables, like keys and wallet. It’s also weather- and water-resistant!
    • Buy: $32, Manduka

    Yoga Pose Christmas Ornaments

    • I feel like ornaments are the ideal present for those who celebrate Christmas, because everyone uses them and you can’t really ever have too many! In my family it’s always been a big part of our holiday traditions to unpack our ornaments and relive the memories from whoever gave them to us while we decorate the tree. I absolutely adore these female yoga pose ornaments hand-created by IronMaidArt on Etsy. They’re made of aluminum and can even be customized!

The Dharma Yoga Wheel is the OG—the first yoga wheel that launched the trend, and it’s comfortable, durable… and fun!

    Standing Desk Balance Board

    • These days, lots of people know that sitting for long stretches is not so good for your health and have standing desks (learn more about the benefits of standing desks here). But there’s another element that’s also important—how you stand. It’s important to shift positions and keep your muscles engaged. This balance board by Fezibo is honestly the missing piece to the puzzle we’ve been looking for. It puts your body into better posture and keep your core and legs active while you work, relieving fatigue for the lucky recipient of this unique wellness gift!

Your loved one will be able to get in their 10,000 daily steps or an elliptical-like workout with the Sunny Health & Fitness Twist Stepper, which also twists and has resistance bands to target your core and upper body for a total-body workout. The best part is, it takes up very little space, is durable, and actually affordable!

    Theragun Massage Gun

    wellness gift

    • Basically everyone has knots and sore muscles that need to be worked out, especially if they’re super active. But while buying someone a massage is nice, gifting them a Theragun is like giving a lifetime of massage, on demand, for the same price! If you haven’t used a massage gun, it’s amazing—the machine vibrates to give you a deep-tissue massage. You can use it on yourself, and this massage gun from Chirogun has 15 head attachments so you can treat any muscle in your body, at a price that’s more affordable than the Theragun brand but works the exact same way.
    • Buy: $99, Amazon

    Travel Foam Roller

    • Do you know someone who likes to workout even while traveling? They’ll absolutely love this gift: a travel-sized foam roller! Foam rolling is such a useful tool to massage out sore and tight muscles and loosen connective fascia, like the massage gun. This TriggerPoint Grid Foam Roller Mini is the one I have and love—but they don’t make it anymore, so it’s really hard to find. Luckily, I tracked down an online store that’s still got some for sale, making this a special rare gift you should jump on quickly!

    Ultimate Ears Boom 3 Speaker

    • As you can see below, I’m a BIG fan of music (I always post a song to set the mood). Especially as a fitness instructor, I don’t play when it comes to speakers. Trust me, THIS is the speaker to get. It may be small, but the Ultimate Ears Boom 3 has better sound than any other portable speaker I’ve tried. It has Bluetooth, 360 degree sound with deep bass, a 15 hour battery life, comes in different colors, and is waterproof and virtually indestructible. I mean—come on. It delivers enough sound to more than pump you up for a workout. (They also make a Megaboom if you want even more features!)

  • The Meaning of Savasana: Why We Do This Final Yoga Pose

    Savasana Meaning

    Savasana Meaning

Savasana is arguably the best part of yoga class.

There are tank tops that say “I’m Just Here For Savasana.” Memes on Instagram featuring puppies lying on their backs. I’ve even found yoga mats dedicated to the pose. It’s widely loved, but what exactly is Savasana, and what is its meaning? Let’s dive in!

If you’re newer to yoga, Savasana (which is Sanskrit and translates to “Corpse Pose”) is a position where you lay down in a supine position (on your back) and chill. It’s traditionally put at the end of the yoga practice as a time of rest.

I’ve always been a fan of Savasana, but a lot of people do resist it! I’m a yoga teacher, and while I’ve never really seen this in my classes, I hear it’s common for students to leave class early to skip Savasana and get on with their day.

If that’s you—I feel ya! I get it. We live in such a fast-paced world, with endless responsibilities and problems piling up on our shoulders. I remember how it feels to think you can’t afford to take even a few minutes’ break.

But that’s exactly why we NEED Savasana.

Savasana is probably the most important pose in any physical yoga (asana — which means “pose”) practice. For real. It’s an essential part of what makes yoga effective.

The physical asana practice is only one of 8 branches (“limbs”) of Yoga. The reason why we do those poses is to work out our bodies, yes, but that’s just the start. The real point is to prepare.

Movement is just the warm-up to the actual aim of yoga: to improve our ability to meditate and self-actualize in our minds.

You may have noticed this—it’s WAY easier to meditate after moving your body! When you work out your body, you calm pathways of stress and anxiety in the brain thanks to all the good chemicals the movement produces. This helps you to relax, if you let it.

And once you relax, you can meditate deeper. You can calm your mind. You can find stillness.

    That’s Savasana!

It’s essentially a pose dedicated to strengthening the mind.

Think of your Savasana time as a mini meditation. During this time your mind draws from all the openness you’ve created in your body through your yoga practice. Your brain sees that the body is more relaxed, and chemically mirrors that and also starts to slow.

When you’re in Savasana, the goal is to surrender.

You want to be as comfortable as possible. Let your body relax and become heavy (use cushions, blankets, or bolsters to support you if needed). Have your feet hips-width distance apart, arms alongside your body, palms up.

Close your eyes, and let them become heavy too. Try to let go of any tension in your body. Breathe deeply.

    Just be.

That’s not to say this is easy—like I mentioned above, many of us actually really struggle with slowing down. It’s important to recognize that’s normal, and that over time it will get easier and easier to really relax while in Savansa.

This will allow you to get the full benefits of the pose.

On a purely physical level, Savasana is also critically important for muscle recovery.

Savasana’s not just good for the mind and soul—it’s also an important part of your physical recovery after a yoga practice. This is even more true the more you challenge yourself in class in terms of strength and stamina.

When we exercise, which yoga certainly can be (it all depends on what type of practice you do), we bring our bodies into a Flight or Fight response, activating our Sympathetic nervous system. Our bodies create the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. In the case of intentional movement, this a good thing. It’s how we build our muscles and train our bodies to become stronger.

But your body also needs to go back into a Rest + Restore response, activating the Parasympathetic nervous system, in order for that rebuilding to actually occur. In the stress mode, we break muscle tissue down and pause all non-essential bodily functions. The rest mode is when the rebuilding and strengthening actually occur, as well as healing and balance as the bodies’ systems come back online.

Our lives are full of stress, which means our Sympathetic nervous system is almost always on. That’s why it’s even more important now than ever to make sure we get plenty of Savasana in our yoga practices.

The ritual of ending class in Savasana symbolizes rebirth.

Many yoga traditions (and there are lots of different types of yoga) come out of Savasana the same way. We return to movement slowly, starting by adding small movements, maybe wiggling your fingers and toes. Then we transition from Corpse Pose to lying on one side, pausing for a moment to honor the earth supporting us. We end by pressing up to a seated position, ready to start our day anew.

Our practice ends with a death (Corpse Pose), and in that death we can shed layers of ourselves we no longer need. We can let go of a thought that’s hurting us, a belief that’s been holding us back, an old way of being.

We let ourselves start over, and we leave the mat freer than we were before.

That’s the huge message of hope underlying our yoga practice, and it’s helpful to remember the meaning of Savasana as you come out of it.

This is your chance to start over. The past is in the past. You are here, now. And you can change and grow however you want and need, by releasing what no longer serves you.

The longer the Savasana, the better.

In my yoga teacher training, I was taught by my guru Elka Haeckel about the importance of Savasana, and that as teachers we needed to make sure to allow for at least 10 minutes of it in our traditional 60 minuted classes.

But I have taken so many classes where Savasana was all but forgotten—maybe a minute, max, at the end of a packed class. Have you encountered that, too? I know we all want to get the most out of the hour as possible, but Savasana is just as important, if not more important, as the rest of the practice.

My fellow yoga teachers, let’s please start to make sure we’re placing the importance on Savasana that it deserves. Longer class times (75-90 minutes) gives us more room to explore the pose more deeply. If you can, allowing for 10-30 minutes of Savasana meditation at the end is incredible. This gives the students enough time to really dive into a meditative state.

But even if it’s just 5 minutes, or even 1—make sure you do Savasana!

Savasana allows you to fully reap the benefits of your yoga practice.

You’ll get the most out of your practice by committing extra attention to this final, and oh-so-important pose. Your body will absorb all the benefits of your physical workout, and your mind will get a chance to find peace.

By devoting time to this calm, meditative asana, you’ll experience these benefits:

    • reduced stress and anxiety, long-term
    • improved mental focus
    • improved feelings of calm and wellbeing
    • reduced blood pressure
    • increased immunity
    • improved lung function
    • ability to stay more present and mindful

In our constantly active and overstimulated world, Savasana is more important than ever.

Plus, it’s the perfect motivation to keep you committed to returning to your yoga mat day after day—all the hard work is worth it for the Savasana!

  • All About Breathwork: Meet San Diego Teacher Chelcy Pine

    Breathwork Chelcy Pine Pin

    Breathwork Chelcy Pine

Thank you so much to today’s special guest: Chelcy Pine, a Yoga and Breathwork Teacher in San Diego!

I get so freaking stoked to introduce you guys to the things that bring light to my life, and Chelcy Pine is definitely one of those. I first met her when I took her Breathwork class with my dear friend Cassy (ILY!) and it was kind of love at first class for me.

Chelcy radiates good energy and love, and is also a no-bs real and powerful badass. (My favorite kind of gal!)

I’ve been excited to share with you all how powerful Breathwork is.

Like, holy crap. If you haven’t tried it, you need to. It has powerful mental and physical health benefits and is a game-changer for clearing through emotional roadblocks.

I’ve noticed that practicing has helped my breathing overall—I breathe easier afterwards, it creates space in the diaphragm. And it is such a powerful anxiety release. Our breaths are so intimately tied to our emotions that intentional breathing can release a lot of stress. (That’s why I’ve created this Breath-Centered Meditation online course, btw!)

I’ve done a lot of Breathwork since being introduced to it in my YTT, but I wanted to bring a real Breathwork master on here to educate all of us about it properly. And Chelcy immediately came to mind as the right one to ask!

Keep reading to hear what this breath queen had to say.

    A little about Chelcy:

Chelcy Pine is a Kundalini Yoga and Breathwork Facilitator in San Diego, CA. She has been practicing and teaching these methods of healing for five years and has found them to be the most powerful and potent technologies in helping to break through physical barriers, emotional blocks, and even reprogramming the way we relate to our own minds and higher consciousness.

In herself she has found the ability to release subconscious patterns, clear past traumas and grief, and operate more from a space of truth and authenticity rather than from a space of fear and survival.

    Chelcy’s Mission Statement:

    “I am on a mission

    to wake you up

to a higher state of consciousness

    by utilizing one simple tool

that has the power to change everything:

    your breath”

Enjoy my interview with Chelcy below to learn all about her and the practice of Breathwork!

    Breathwork Chelcy Pine

Hi Chelcy! You are a Breathwork teacher, Reiki practitioner, Kundalini yoga teacher, and a poet. What led you to this path?

I always love this question because the way I actually describe Breathwork is that it gives you the ability to use breath to trace back to the root of a traumatic experience and transform that emotion into your power—to make it a diamond.

I started writing at a very young age and have a Bachelors in Poetry. IT was always a profound way for this introverted soul to process her experience of the world when it felt too heavy to manage. I suffered from Asthma and allergies (to nearly everything green outside) so there would be months at a time when waking up alone created severe anxiety, because I never knew when I was going to get triggered by not breathing and have to go to the hospital.

When I discovered Energy Work and Breathwork, I learned it wasn’t about me treating the asthma: it was about me tracing back to the first time I couldn’t breathe. It was about healing the emotional body that had led to a physical manifestation of suffocation.

I haven’t used an inhaler in almost seven years. Which is why I so strongly believe that the cause of suffering can simultaneously be the moment we give birth to our true dharma, and carve the power of our life path.

I was first introduced to you through your amazing Breathwork classes. How did you first discover Breathwork?

I actually had decided to do a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training without having any intention of ever teaching or without even knowing who the teacher was. In the first couple of weeks, she told me (without knowing anything about me, so I really believe this is the moment I started believing in “channeling”) “You should try Kundalini Yoga… it’s fucking weird, I think you would like it.”

She was right. I found it that day. And my entire life changed.

I started teaching Kundalini Yoga, and a woman told me to come try a Transformational Breathwork workshop. I remember at the time thinking “kundalini is the Breathwork.”

I had an ego death that night—I was in a room with 30 other people following this two-part Breathwork when it felt like every asthma attack I had ever had came to the surface. My throat got tight and my hands locked into themselves with fear and a woman rolled me over on to my belly and once I felt it was safe, I felt it all leave my body. Another rebirth.

I have never looked back since. I can’t imagine what would still be held in my body had I never discovered this modality.

Can you explain what exactly Breathwork is? How do you do it?

Breathwork is essentially a form of Breath Therapy: it consists of following a circular, connected pattern of Breathing (about a 3 second inhale and 1 second exhale through the mouth).

It replaces all other patterns of breathing that we experience when we experience dense emotions. By this I mean that Anger, Grief, and Fear all have their own Breathing Patterns. Breathwork is powerful to practice because the breath is connected and conscious and allows for us to reprogram the Nervous System in a way that quickly and effectively releases the suppression of these emotions in the body and opens up the lungs and diaphragm so that we experience deeper, fuller breaths even after the work is done.

    What are the benefits?

So many! Physically, it improves the energy levels and oxygen levels in the body, helps to break patterns/addictions, balances the flow of energy in the body, helps to balance the endocrine system, helps to alleviate stress, respiratory ailments, and psychosomatic illness.

Emotionally, Breathwork helps to clear past traumas from grief, guilt, shame, anger. It helps to reduce worry and anxiety, connects us to our intuition and truth, connects us to SPIRIT, heightens awareness of self-sabotaging patterns so you can work through them, increases our JOY and GRATITUDE, lets us tap in to the ancient wisdom of the body necessary to heal, and relieves depression and negative emotions.

    Breathwork Chelcy Pine

What can we expect to feel when we practice Breathwork?

You can feel an entire spectrum of feelings, sensations. Oftentimes, the body actually tingles or vibrates and may feel grounded for the first time or even like it is floating because so much energy moves. Because we are using the Breathwork to access stored emotions in the body, we may also experience the movement and release of sadness, fear, anger, or even joy!

It is very common to laugh, to yell, or to cry for a larger portion of the Breathwork session. This is ENCOURAGED when it is authentic, because the Breath is allowing for the body to finally process emotion that has been trapped for a lifetime in a healthy and effective way. You will feel the truth.

Do you know the origins of Breathwork? Where did it come from?

I studied Transformational Breathwork under the Foundation of Transformation Breathwork by Judith Kravitz, my teacher who developed this style nearly 40 years ago. She actually studied Rebirthing and Water Breathwork and drew a lot of her experience in to this Breath Academy. She used it every day for a year and was able to actually cure her own thyroid cancer without any Western treatment!

Her school is my favorite because it is the most informative, experiential, and intelligent that I found in all of my studies. I do believe a lot of Breathwork was drawn all the way back from different “Pranayama” Exercises under the school of Yoga and Kundalini Technology as well as different Eastern studies. But Judith Kravitz herself is American.

What are the most common questions or concerns you get from people who have never tried it?

I often get asked why it helps to release emotion and how it is actually creating so much sensation in the physical body! People are often VERY surprised, whether they have just heard about it or tried it for the first time themselves with me, at how powerful of an effect and how much awareness can come to them simply by breathing, something that we all do all of the time.

I often explain that if Breath is the thing keeping us alive and the thing we can only go minutes without, imagine what we would be capable of, or what our potential would be if we started there and enhanced that. It expands you in every way: physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally.

Often concerns of clients who seek me out and are unfamiliar with the work are that they don’t know if they are ready to face what the Breath might bring up, as far as old emotions, experiences, or traumatic memories go.

My response to that is this: that if your breath is what keeps you alive, it is ultimately the most ancient wisdom we have, and will only reveal to us what we are ready to face (whether we mentally believe that or not) and will only support us in getting us through, as it always fights to keep us alive and will only do the same in Breathwork.

You are definitely a powerful healer. How can we work with you? What are all the services and classes you offer?

You angel. Thank you so much. I offer a collective Breath community (online, via Zoom!) every single Sunday from 5:00-6:30 PAC: named Breath Church.

This is a group class where I set a theme, guide the students through about 40 minutes of Breath followed by a 10-15 minute Integration Period (stillness, or savasana) and then we process together afterwards in what I have called Spirit Council. This community is very special to me as Breathwork is a very deep and sacred practice, so processing together is powerful.

I also hold one-on-one and small group sessions out of a home office here in Golden Hill, San Diego. I facilitate Transformational Breathwork as well as Kundalini Yoga and practice Reiki Energy Medicine.

And I also lead Reiki Level 1 & 2 Trainings, in addition to a Seven Month long Reiki Mastership Academy. These are my favorite as of late—moving in to teaching facilitators how to facilitate!

  • Meet My Favorite Yoga Teacher: Elka Haeckel

I’m so excited to introduce you today to my yoga teacher and mentor, Elka Haeckel!

I call her the best because she really is. Elka Haeckel changed yoga for me. I’ve been practicing since I was 15, but I’ve yet to come across another teacher who’s as knowledgable about both the physical asana (“poses”) practice as she is about living yoga.

In addition to knowing about the deep history and philosophies of yoga and its sister science Ayurveda, Elka radiates authenticity. She speaks with intention, and teaches from her heart. This is what she teaches to her yoga teacher trainees, which is why I found her YTT so transformative.

I first met Elka by pure intuition.

I was in a really painful period of my life, deep in the process of trying to learn about the body to heal my chronic pain. Elka Haeckel had just opened her new studio in San Diego, Elka Yoga & Wellness Center, which has a gorgeous outdoor aerial yoga deck. I was newly into aerial yoga and went to her studio for a class in Dec 2015.

I hadn’t even met Elka herself yet when a Facebook ad popped up for their upcoming yoga teacher training that coming Jan-Feb. I’d thought about doing a yoga teacher training before, but not seriously. But after reading about the training on her website, a voice inside me (my intuition) whispered loud and clear: Do it.

So I did, and it set me on a path that would change everything.

I wanted to do yoga teacher training partially because I knew I might teach it (I was already teaching barre, spin, and Pilates at that time), but mostly because I was seeking the deeper side of yoga. I knew my pain was worsened by my lifelong anxiety, and that yoga was supposed to be good for that.

I’d taken yoga classes all my life but really knew nothing about its rich history, about the teachings that help bring mental peace. I wanted to go beyond doing Warrior 2 pose and find out what the real juice was behind yoga. What gives it its healing power.

And let me tell you: Elka brings the juice.

Keeping life juicy is one of Elka’s most common sayings—and she fully embodies this. I learned so much from Elka, not only how to teach yoga to others but also about who I am and how I want to live through a yogic lens.

She continues to be a powerful mentor and friend for me, and I know you’ll love her as much as I do. If you’re in San Diego, be sure to visit her incredible studio/wellness center and learn from her in person! Otherwise, read to the bottom for ways to work with Elka online from around the world.

So without further ado, enjoy my interview with Elka Haeckel:

Elka Haeckel is the founder of Elka Yoga and Co-Owner of Elka Yoga & Wellness Center in San Diego.

Elka has been teaching yoga since 2004. She is a worldwide yoga instructor who has developed her own juicy, unique yoga practices in addition to traditional styles. Follow Elka on Instagram for free classes and teachings!

She’s a certified Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 Hatha Yoga instructor with additional certifications in Ayurveda, Reiki, Prana Flow, Restorative Yoga, Tantra Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, SUP Yoga, Yoga Therapy and Thai Medical Massage. She is also a certified life coach.

Elka’s exuberance and passion for teaching, extensive knowledge of yoga philosophy, and holistic health, combined with her experience of owning a successful San Diego yoga studio, international training, workshops, retreats and teacher training makes her a positive force to be reckoned with. Elka’s friendly approach to students, friends and business partners inspires an inner transformation within everyone she meets. As she likes to remind everyone:

“We are just getting started on this journey, so open your heart and your mind to see your true possibilities!”

Hi Elka! Tell me about how you began your yoga journey—what got you into yoga?

My journey with yoga started when I moved here to the USA in 1999. I was born in northeast Brazil.  Today I’ve been in the U.S. for half of my life.

When I was 23 years old I had my first episode of a panic attack and consequently, I suffered severely from depression and anxiety.

It was then I found yoga. After years of treatment with medication along with doing yoga and meditation, I was able to get off of the medication and I continued my path as a holistic health practitioner.

Yoga was an awakening for me.

I was very wild in my 20’s, partying too much and very disconnected to my sacred temple: my body. Yoga brought me a strong connection to the ground of my being, as well as led me to my purpose which is to LOVE by helping others.

When did you decide to train to be a teacher yourself?

I took my very first teacher training in 2003, but the training I did was about following a script. I wasn’t really thinking about teaching yoga, but I was doing yoga every single day.

One day, my teacher offered to train me for free if I would teach at his studio. And that was the moment when the seed of teaching yoga was planted in my heart.

In 2003 I also got married, and my husband and I took one semester off to surf in Costa Rica, Peru, and Brazil. We stayed 4 months in Costa Rica, but we spent all of our money in the first month. So we both had to start working in Costa Rica.

I started teaching yoga in a gym in Costa Rica for trade, so I could use their gym. It worked out great as I was practicing my yoga teaching as well as my Spanish.

In 2004 we came back to the U.S., and I started teaching the right way—from the heart. In 2005 I took an amazing teacher training with Kathy Lee (in memory) and Diane Ambrosini where I became ERYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance). Since then I have continued my path as a yoga student as well.

How did you build your career as a teacher in San Diego?

After a few months teaching for a few studios in San Diego, I started to teach yoga by the bay outdoors, and it became very popular.

However, when the winter came, it got too cold to continue. I decided to take the risk and open my own yoga studio, called Namaste Yoga Center in Ocean Beach, San Diego.

The space was very small but very cozy and warm. The studio became popular fast in the community. In 2007, I had to expand for a bigger location.

What led you to create the Elka Yoga & Wellness Center?

In 2012, I went through a divorce and decided to sell Namaste Yoga Center to have some time for my personal life. I was still teaching yoga in a few different places in San Diego, and leading teacher trainings.

I was also learning more about additional wellness therapies. I had become a holistic health practitioner specializing in Thai Medical Massage in 2008. I did many other wellness trainings as well, including Ayur-Yoga, Craniosacral, and Prenatal.

In 2015, me and Anna Fernandez (my soul sister and business partner) decided to open a center that would offer both yoga and wellness. And Elka Yoga & Wellness Center was born!

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

I always say “teaching is healing for me”. When I am teaching, I am so present with each one of my students. Even nowadays, connecting with each other virtually, I can still feel them.

Teaching is a feeling. Sometimes I think about how many years I’ve been teaching and it never gets old to me. I am always inspired to learn more, to serve more.

And mostly, it is priceless to me to witness the healing process of my students. I have a range of ages of students, from 15-90’s, and I absolutely love all of them. I learn from all of their differences and limitations. They are my greatest teachers.

I always say during the training, “Your best teachers are your students, so practice teaching people who have never done yoga before. They will challenge you to think with the beginner’s mind.”

My passion is not only teaching yoga but also leading yoga teacher trainings. I’ve been leading YTTs since 2011 and this Fall will be my number 22, including one in Brazil.

I’ve trained over 200 people and it only gets juicier every time. The program that I’ve created for the last decade is beyond becoming a yoga teacher. For me it is rewarding to see the way those beautiful souls unfold themselves into a powerful, life-transformational experience. I absolutely LOVE doing the trainings. And what I love about it the most is the community we create.

How can we practice with you online if we’re not in San Diego?

I have a YouTube Channel with short yoga videos for those who don’t have a full hour but at least 15-20 minutes.

I currently offer life-coaching sessions through Zoom—find out more here.

I also lead yoga retreats once a year somewhere around the globe. I’ve done them in Mexico, Costa Rica, Bali, and Spain. 2021 will be Brazil if the Universe allows.

  • The Different Types of Yoga Explained, Finally

    Different Types of Yoga

You’ve probably noticed by now that there are MANY different types of yoga.

I remember feeling completely bewildered when I first wanted to get into yoga. It was 2013, when my chronic pain was fresh. I’d done yoga before, but only at school and 24 Hour Fitness where it was just called, simply, “yoga.” I knew the practice was supposed to be able to help me feel better, and I wanted to dive deeper.

But I didn’t understand which type of yoga I should try. Do I want Vinyasa? What does Ashtanga mean? What’s like the basic, you know, standard, yoga? Who can explain these words to me?

It doesn’t help that yoga literally uses a different language: Sanskrit, a language we in America generally aren’t exposed to outside of the yoga sphere. So trying to figure out what it all means can feel a little intimidating, especially to the newbie.

I’m here to help you decode all of it so you can decide which type of yoga is best for you.

I did a LOT of exploring on my path to now being a full-time yoga instructor. (Btw—You can learn more about my teachings here!)

To start, there is no “standard” for yoga. I know that can make things a little confusing, but it’s a thousand-year old practice that originated in India, with many lineages of gurus (teachers) over the years who have all developed their own style. It’s constantly evolving—we practitioners continue to make changes as we learn more about the body and the ways we can use yoga to heal.

So there’s lots to choose from! And all forms offer different benefits. There’s not one that’s necessarily better than the others—it depends on what your specific needs are. Whichever of these different types of yoga you’re drawn to is a great place to start.

» Want me to recommend what I think might be best for you? Post in the Comments section below and I’ll be happy to let you know my thoughts!

It might take some trial and error to find the style that fits your needs. Keep in mind that your yoga experience will vary greatly depending on your teacher, and which studio you go to, so explore around a bit and try a variety of classes. You’ll always learn something new in every practice, no matter where you go.

Try out multiple types of yoga and decide what’s right for you!

    Different Types of Yoga

    Vinyasa Yoga

This is the most common and popular form of yoga here in the U.S. It’s probably what comes to your mind when you think of modern yoga.

Vinyasa yoga is a more vigorous practice that focuses on movement, flowing your body in sync with your breath through sequences that build. Each sequence ends with a Vinyasa, which is the action of going from Plank to Chaturanga to Upward Facing Dog to Downward Facing Dog.

The Vinyasa action itself is, by the way, a pretty challenging and advanced movement. It takes a lot of strength to do a proper Chaturanga, and enough openness to safely go into Upward Facing Dog. These are often taught without much warm-up, because this style is so popular. But I cannot tell you how many wrong Vinyasas I’ve seen students do. It hurts my heart.

I recommend, if you’re newer or not sure if you’re nailing it, to practice this motion with your knees down on your mat, and modify with a low Cobra until you feel warm enough to go into Upward Facing Dog. Like I said, that’s hard. Don’t sacrifice form just because other people in class are! Yoga is not about how you look, it’s about how your body feels. So set ego aside, no matter what you practice, and move more mindfully.

    Hatha Yoga

This one is a little tricky because Hatha is a very wide umbrella. Most forms of yoga are a branch of Hatha yoga. It focuses on postures (asana) and breath. You can think of it as the foundation of Vinyasa, which is a style of Hatha. (I know it’s a bit of a web lol)

You move from one pose to another, sometimes in sequences. Nowadays, this label usually refers to a class that has none or much less Vinyasas. It typically moves slower than a Vinyasa style class, with longer holds (which is sometimes more challenging!).

    Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga is a form of yoga created by yoga master K. Pattabhi Jois. It’s super structured: you do a traditional series of postures performed in the same order every time. There are six series that have various advancement options to work up to.

The class flows like a Vinyasa class but even more so—you move nonstop, with zero pausing for adjustments. The result is a solid and challenging cardio workout. The nonstop flow is also helpful to quiet a nonstop mind.

    Different Types of Yoga

    Power Yoga

Power yoga is new to the yoga world, created in 1995 by Beryl Bender Birch. She wanted to introduce Ashtanga to the Western world, so she rebranded it and gave it an American-friendly spin in a smart move that made it more accessible. Remember, even though it’s super common now, yoga was still considered new and weird and different in the 90s! But people could get down with a good workout, which is what Power Yoga delivers.

These days, Power Yoga can kind of mean… kind of anything. The term has branched outside of Birch’s practice and now can refer to basically any form of vigorous Vinyasa yoga class. You’ll want to clarify with the teachers and studios you find to see how exactly they define Power Yoga.

    Yoga Sculpt

Yoga Sculpt is basically a new level up from the Power Yoga branch. This style has been popularized by the megastudio brand CorePower. It usually incorporates hand weights while flowing through a Vinyasa style class. It may also involve other functional movement exercises, like jumping jacks, squats, and an abdominal series.

Many Americans are introduced to the yoga practice through this style, but I encourage you to branch out. With such a strong focus on the body and getting a workout, these classes often are too far away from the real foundations of yoga that they don’t give you many of the benefits of mind-body connection and stress relief. I know, because I began my yoga practice going to CorePower! Yoga is so much more than a workout—while it definitely is great for that, there are many ways to go deeper. And that’s where the magic lies.

    Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga was created by B. K. S. Iyengar, and is hyper-focused on alignment. Which I love! Poses are usually held much longer than other Hatha style classes to really perfect them, and you’ll use alllll the props. (you know how I’m a fan)

This style is especially beneficial for those with injuries, the elderly, or anyone new to yoga/movement. It really builds the mind-body connection as you become more aware of exactly how you’re holding your body in space. Practicing Iyengar will improve your form when you practice other types of yoga, keeping you healthy and mobile.

    Hot Yoga

I don’t want to even bring it up, but you may have heard of a little something called Bikram yoga. Well, Bikram is an evil dude, so let’s just stay away from supporting him or his schools.

Instead, look for Hot Yoga! That’s basically what Bikram is, anyway (essentially it’s its own specific, highly branded form of hot yoga). And hot yoga is exactly what it sounds like—yoga in a heated room.

Temperatures vary, with studios ranging from 90-120 degrees F (that’s right!). Some people swear by it. And if you don’t sweat very often through other means, it can be great to get in a hot yoga session, since the sweat can be detoxifying for the body.

But I’ll be honest, this is firmly NOT my jam. I’m not a fan. For me too much sweat can be dehydrating and inflammatory for my body, and I have a stronger practice at room temp. But if you love hot yoga or want to try, then awesome! Whatever brings you to your mat. (which you’ll want to clean)

    Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini is a unique style that I haven’t tried yet. Like Hatha yoga, Kundalini involves poses (asana) and focuses on breath, but also takes it a step further and incorporates mantra chanting and meditation. This style was introduced to the Western world in the 1970s by Yogi Bhajan.

The name derives from the Sanskrit word kundal, which translates to “coiled energy.” It centers on the concept that we each have energy in the base of our spine that we can release through the seven chakras, up the spine, by practicing Kundalini. A typical class “is comprised of three parts: an opening chant (known as “tuning in”) followed by a brief warm-up for your spine, a kriya (which is a sequence of postures paired with breathing techniques), and a closing meditation or song.” (via MindBodyGreen)

    Restorative Yoga

Restorative Yoga is the relaxing and therapeutic form of yoga. Instead of focusing on a workout, the goal is exactly as the name suggests: to restore the body back to health. This style uses props, like Iyengar, in poses that are held for a long time to align and gently stretch the body. You do most if not all of the practice on the ground. This style is best for post-workout recovery and to relieve stress and insomnia. It’s great to heal and prevent injuries!

I love teaching Restorative Yoga, because I think that in today’s go-go-go world, we all need more slowing down.

    Yin Yoga

Yin is a specific type of Restorative Yoga. It boasts the longest asana holds of all the different styles, with poses typically held anywhere from 5-20 minutes, usually using props, all on the ground. It’s super relaxing and slow, so again a wonderful option if you feel stressed, overloaded, or unwell. I practice this late at night, because I always want to fall asleep afterward.

There are tons of other types of yoga, too!

These are just the main ones, but there are tons of styles that I didn’t get to here. There are now even variations on yoga that include aerial yoga (which I teach and is amaaaazing), acro yoga (where you and a partner+ work together to create shapes), SUP yoga (yoga on a Stand Up Paddleboard, which I also have taught). If you ever run into me, ask me about my days teaching SUP yoga at the Oahu Disney resort Aulani. I have the best story.

I’ve seen yoga that uses a special prop wall, and there’s even goat yoga—which is exactly what it sounds like, yoga with goats. (I’ve done it and it was rad fun.) The variations are becoming endless!

When you’re choosing which yoga practice is right for you, be sure to look for a studio and teachers with proper education credentials (200 or 500 hr RYT with the Yoga Alliance) and a strong knowledge of anatomy and the body. Because there are so many types of yoga now, there are just as many types of teachers, and the industry’s not really regulated or standardized. I’ve seen plenty of people teach yoga with zero training at all.

Don’t automatically trust that your teacher is an expert—you and your body are always the best guide. Listen to it and do what feels right for you! And if something in class ever doesn’t vibe with you or feel good, Child’s Pose, Savasana, and the word “no” are always available to you.

Yoga is an incredible methodology that has the power to heal and strengthen both your body and mind.

Whatever variation you choose, you’ll be giving back to yourself in a powerful way!
