    Amy Baack

Hi friends! I’m Amy Baack, the founder and solopreneur behind Mind Body Badass. I have been teaching yoga and fitness since 2012 across the west coast—yoga, aerial yoga, SUP yoga, Pilates, barre, spin, Lagree Method, and more! I started out teaching classes at major studios and resorts in Los Angeles, San Diego, and even Oahu—before deciding to go all-in on building my own yoga business in 2020 to specialize in private and corporate yoga offerings. I have my 200 hr Yoga Teacher Training, 200 hr Meditation Teacher Training, and Sound Healing certifications.

Before yoga, I had a career working as a television writer and social media manager. Yoga and meditation became critical to helping me manage my stress in these fast-paced jobs, so I’m passionate about working with fellow high-performers to help you feel like a badass, despite all of life’s stressors.

I also believe yoga should be accessible for everyone. In 2021 I began teaching donation-optional yoga classes for the community in San Diego at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park. I’m proud to keep these free classes going even now that I live in Palm Springs. I always try to teach in a way that is inclusive of all bodies and abilities—anyone can do yoga!

Mind Body Badass grew in 2024 to include my team of private yoga instructors and sound healers in cities all throughout Southern California. I run this business on my own, so please know how grateful I am for your support and presence on and off the mat!

YOU are a Mind Body Badass, and I’m so glad you’re here.

  • Where To Find Outdoor Yoga in San Diego in 2022

Outdoor Yoga in San Diego Pinterest

    Outdoor Yoga San Diego

Photo by The Livewell Media Co for Amy Baack (that’s me!)

In Southern California, we’re lucky to have warm, sunny days nearly year-round—the perfect setting to find Outdoor Yoga in San Diego!

San Diego is known for being a super active, outdoorsy city, with tons of beautiful parks, beaches, and other natural settings. And now that Covid is also a high concern, outdoor yoga in San Diego is becoming more popular than ever. There are tons of options throughout the city, and with nearly 365 days of perfect weather it’s almost always a good day to take your practice outside!

I know this firsthand, because I actually teach a popular public Outdoor Yoga class in San Diego myself, at Sunset Cliffs (see details below to join!). We’re so blessed here to have that option, even in winter months. Doing Yoga also outside takes the practice to a whole other level—you’ll find it’s even easier to feel more grounded and centered while being out in nature. The health benefits of being outside along with doing yoga easily makes this a must-do activity, whether you live in San Diego or are visiting!

To have the best experience possible, don’t forget to bring these important items with you to your Outdoor Yoga Class:

    • Yoga mat
    • Towel to put underneath your mat (esp. for sandy/dusty situations)
    • Sunscreen
    • Hat or a visor
    • A jacket (in case it turns chilly—you’ll want to stay warm during Savasana!)
    • Water
    • Towel for sweat

And here’s how to clean your mat when you’re done!

Now that you’re prepped and ready to go, let’s get to the list of class options…

Where to find Outdoor Yoga in San Diego in 2022:

I’ve searched all over and reached out to my network of yogis here in San Diego to come up with the most comprehensive list of all the Yoga Teachers and Studios who are currently offering Outdoor Yoga in San Diego in 2022.

As a yoga teacher myself, you might think it’s weird that I’m promoting other options besides my own. But I believe in collaboration over competition—the more access to yoga the better, right? When one succeeds, we all do. If you want to practice with me, you can join me at Sunset Cliffs (listed below), or click here to work with me online or for a private session.

I divided the options into two categories: Donation classes offered by independent teachers, and Studios that have outdoor studio spaces. I’ll continue to update this list as I learn of more options. Be sure to let me know anything I missed in the Comments section at the end of this post!

Donation Outdoor Yoga in San Diego

On a budget? San Diego’s got your back with plenty of Donation classes that are open to the public. It’s okay if you can’t pay—you’re always welcome at these classes (just bring good vibes and help support the teacher by telling others about the class). Most teachers have a suggested donation, so be sure to ask if you’re unsure, and bring cash. Every donation is welcome and helps support the teacher to keep the class going!

Saturday All Levels Donation Yoga at Sunset Cliffs

Don’t mind me while I do a little shameless self-promoting. 🙂 I honestly list this first because I know this is an awesome experience! Sunset Cliffs Natural Park in Ocean Beach, San Diego is one of the most magical spots in SoCal. Picture yourself doing yoga on a cliff overlooking the ocean, listening to the sounds of the crashing waves below. You may even spot a whale or dolphin while you’re doing Tree Pose. (We’ve seen both!)

Come enjoy my Donation All-Levels yoga flow at Sunset Cliffs every Saturday morning 9-10 am! This is an accessible Hatha yoga class, and everyone is welcome, including beginners. It’s the perfect balance of feel-good stretching and strengthening. Class is limited to 50 attendees, so be sure to sign up beforehand!

  • The 5 Best Face Masks For Working Out

5 Best Face Masks For Working Out Pin

Best Face Masks For Working Out

Face masks for working out that won’t make you feel like you’re inhaling sweat and fabric with each gasping breath? They do exist.

It’s hard to believe that it’s officially been a year since the coronavirus upended all our lives. And now that the end is sort of in sight with widespread vaccinations, the shift to reopening is happening slowly, with new rules. In California, indoor gyms are now open (btw: you can find a master list of current Outdoor Workouts in Los Angeles here), but many still require masks to be worn during the workout. So what are the best face masks for working out available now in 2021?

I did some digging (and guinea-pig testing) and found the 5 Best Face Masks to wear during a workout that avoid all the usual issues. Most masks get soaked and soggy from your sweat and heavy breathing, and the result is—disgusting. You inhale your own spit. IYKYK. I’m not still traumatized by it or anything.

Another problem with most masks is they don’t wick away or absorb moisture while you’re working out, and that trapped moisture then frequently leads to maskne (aka acne caused by your mask on your cheeks, nose, and chin). Speaking of, you can find more info in this article on maskne from Shape Magazine.

Masks need to stay mostly dry while you sweat.

Let’s talk about some other musts. A good mask for working out must be:

    • Sweat-wicking (stays mostly dry)
    • Breathable
    • Adjustable
    • Comfortable

A note on wearing face masks while working out: the way you breathe matters.

I get that wearing a mask while sweating can be uncomfortable. Oftentimes people find the sensation suffocating, so I want to remind you to try to relax and try to focus on controlling your breathing. Try to relax—anxiety will just make it more difficult. Wearing a mask is actually a great mild challenge to strengthen your lungs and breath capacity. Once you start breathing deeper, you’ll find it a lot easier to tolerate breathing through the mask.

Skeptical? Well, if you’ve ever taken a spin class, you know what an intense cardio workout it is. But I’m happy to report that you can totally do it in a mask. I have! It is slightly more challenging only because it requires you to be more mindful of how you breathe. But this is a good thing, because it will help you improve your overall fitness performance whether you’re wearing a mask or not.

    Here’s how to breathe better:

Aim to take slow, deep breaths in the lowest part of your belly.

If you’ve taken my online Meditation course about Breathing techniques (Shortcut to Calm, a great way to improve your breathing and mindfulness), you’ve learned how to do this deep breathing during your meditation practice. Think of inflating your ribs like a balloon. Focus on the airflow coming from the lower parts of your lungs and diaphragm, and not on how the air is coming in and out of your nose. Relax your face, mouth, and throat. Try to breathe in a steady rhythm.

If you’re struggling, back off on your workout. This goes for whether you’re wearing a mask or not–you always want to be able to breathe steadily during your workout, especially cardio. If you’re ever pushing yourself to the point of being red-faced and gasping, you’re over-activating your body’s stress response, which can actually make your workout work against you and cause more inflammation than good.

One last thing about wearing masks—

It’s all about how you choose to look at the situation (like every situation we face). For me, it’s a clear and easy way to protect others and myself, and to demonstrate that I care about the health of those around me, vaccinated or not. And if you have the right mask, it’s really not uncomfortable either. Dare I say I sometimes… enjoy wearing one?

My top mask of choice to stay comfortable while working out is number one on the list below. Remember that choosing to wear reusable face masks helps both you and the environment (but don’t worry, I do you have you covered on a top-rated disposable option as well!). They can all be machine washed with warm water, and I hang mine dry to keep them lasting longer. And they’re really the best of the best when it comes to handling a workout.

    Let’s get into it!

The 5 Best Face Masks For Working Out in 2021

    1. Onzie Mindful Masks

    Onzie Mindful Masks

Onzie is one of my favorite activewear brands, and they now make my favorite mask to workout in (it’s what I’m wearing in the photos on this page)! One of the first companies to react to the coronavirus by pivoting to create and sell masks, Onzie had the right idea from the start: why not take up-cycled activewear performance material and use it to create masks? The result is the unisex Mindful Mask that is comfortable, breathable, cool (in temperature and style), sweat-wicking, flexible, and sustainable. The definition of a top mask to work out in.

You can currently choose a random assorted 2-pack for the masks, or select specific colors and styles in pre-made bundles. The masks are created with “a multi-layer fabric made of Full Flex Spandex technology for the exterior with a high performance inner lining and soft touch spandex straps.” Onzie also makes a line of Mindful Masks for Kids!

Even better: During their Mindful Mask initiative, Onzie donated thousands of masks to local hospitals, as well as a portion of proceeds to healthcare workers across America through the Center For Disaster Philanthropy. Gotta love a company that makes good products with a good cause.

Buy: Mindful Masks, $24 (pack of 2) via Onzie

    2. Adidas Face Covers

    Adidas Face Covers

Adidas Face Covers are sporty, chic, and unisex. The flexible material and stretch bands around the ears provide full coverage, comfort, and ease of use. They’re made with two layers of fabric that are soft, breathable, and ready for your workout.

These masks are very similar to Reebok Face Covers (btw: they’re owned by the same parent company, and Reebok’s masks also come highly recommended), but I prefer Adidas’ because they’re made out of Primegreen, a high-performance recycled material. Always bonus points for sustainability.

Adidas Face Covers come in two sizes (XS/S or M/L), so you can get a fit that’s better suited to your face. They also have different color pack options, so be sure to explore their options to fit your look!

    Buy: Face Covers, $20 (pack of 3) via Adidas—Choose XS/S or M/L

    3. Athleta Activate Face Mask

    Athleta Activate Face Mask

As I embarked on my research for this post, I asked my Instagram followers and fellow Facebook Group members about their favorite face masks to wear for working out, and time and time again Athleta came highly recommended. Like Onzie, Athleta makes their Activate Face Masks out of the same material as their activewear—in this case, their performance-driven, comfortable TurboDry™ fabric. They dry sweat as quickly as it comes, and stay feeling light and airy against your skin through long usages.

These soft and breathable masks are were designed specifically with your active lifestyle in mind, and are perfect for yoga, spin, and beyond. They have adjustable, soft knit ear loops for all-day comfort and a moldable nose piece. The masks have even been proven to have an average 90.3% particle-blocking performance to keep you safe both in the gym and on the street. Athleta also makes a line of similar Made to Move face masks designed for kids.

Buy: Activate Face Mask, $30 or 2 via Athleta

    4. Under Armor Sportsmask

    Under Armour Sportsmask

This is for all my serious athletes, or those who just want the best of the best. Introducing the Mercedes of the workout face mask collection: the Under Armor Sportsmask. This unisex face mask truly is the perfect face mask for athletes. As their website says: “It’s got the airflow you need, a cool feel, and the best fit for running or training.”

Specifically designed to be worn for those participating in serious sports, the Sportsmask is really everything you could want in a workout mask. Made with high-performance UA materials, the mask has a structured design that sits up off the face and lips. It has three layers: the outer layer made with light air pockets, an open cell foam to reduce moisture, and an iso-chill fabric interior that is actually designed to stay cool against your skin and features an anti-microbial treatment.

The Under Armor Sportsmask comes in five different sizes, from XS to XXL. It has a less “sleek” look, but it’s all about function, anyway. The best part? It has built-in UPF 50+ sun protection (you know I’m a big fan of sun protection). Safe to say this mask puts in the work—so you can, too.

Buy: Sportsmask, $30 or 2 for $40 via Under Armor

    5. Sudilo Disposable Face Masks

If you’re looking for a disposable option, look no further than Sudilo Disposable Face Masks from Amazon. They’re the perfect option for a workout because they’re super light and breathable, don’t get soggy, and are this chic black color. They have 3 filter layers for protection, an adjustable nose piece, comfortable elastic ear pieces, and they’re highly affordable.

I know, because I put one of these face masks through the TEST. My cousin had a small outdoor wedding a few weeks ago for family, and we had a dance floor. I initially was wearing a super cute fancy silk face mask in rose gold that was the same shade as my dress—it was a 2021 Inauguration monochrome vibe, but that mask was definitely more pretty than functional. Once I started dancing, the fabric pulled into my mouth with every breath and I was actually gasping.

Luckily, I’d brought one of these Sudilo Disposable Face Masks as a backup. I pulled it out of my jacket pocket, swapped it out, and it stayed put, sturdy, dry, and breathable as I proceeded to dance for 2 hours straight. Safe to say, it passed the test.

Buy: Sudilo Disposable Face Masks, $11 (pack of 50) via Amazon

A note on disposable masks: please cut the strings when you throw them away! This will help protect marine and wildlife that may encounter the mask as trash in the future. Otherwise, they can get potentially caught and strangled in the mask strings.

Enjoy being in WORKOUT CLASSES again, everyone! It feels so good to be together again, even if we do have to wear masks. It’s been a long pandemic, but we’ll be out of it soon. Stay safe and socially distanced out there, and have fun reconnecting with other people again! A big lesson of this whole experience has definitely been that we all need each other, sometimes more than we remember.

  • The Top 10 Self-Help Books To Learn About Mindfulness and Spiritual Growth

Top 10 Self Help Books List

Top Self Help Books For Mindfulness

These self-help and mindfulness books will change your life.

I know they did mine. Growing up, I didn’t really have anyone I could turn to for advice. But I learned from an early age to turn to books to find the wisdom I craved—it’s what inspired me to become a writer myself. And once I found these self-help and mindfulness books in my mid-20s, my self-growth flew to a whole new level.

I really dove into my personal and spiritual development in 2015, when I was hitting a point of rock bottom in my life and studying yoga and meditation in order to heal and become a teacher myself. I had spent most of my adolescence and 20s lost, depressed, and making bad choices. But I also knew that there was a way to be happier, and I wanted to learn everything I could about how to do that. When I say these books changed my life, I mean it. They helped teach me how to think and expanded my awareness about what life is, as well as who I am and who I can become.

Whether you’re feeling lost or just craving some powerful inspiration and motivation from the top thought leaders in the world, these self-help books are just what you need. I’ve read them all multiple times now, and I know I’ll continue to re-read them as my life goes on.

I hope these books help support you on your own journey to self-growth and actualization.

You CAN be happy. You can be fulfilled. You can be the person you’ve always dreamed of being. There’s a better way to live, and these books will teach you how. It all starts with getting to know yourself and healing past wounds through mindfulness.

By the way—all of the below books are linked to Bookshop, which is an amazing website that supports local, independent bookstores. I’ve been trying to buy less from Amazon lately in an effort to shop small businesses, and so I hope you’ll join me in purchasing your books from this awesome online store!

Now, let’s get to the good stuff—the book list:

THE TOP 10 SELF-HELP BOOKS TO LEARN ABOUT MINDFULNESS AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH

    1. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

If I could only recommend ONE book to you, it would be this. Hands down, The Power of Now wins. Talk about a life-changer; this single book completely changed who I am and how I think. Which sounds dramatic, but it’s true. Reading this book is when I really first began to understand meditation and made the commitment to start my own practice. Eckhart Tolle is a world-renowned spiritual leader, and in this book he teaches how to find enlightenment through becoming more fully present in the NOW.

I definitely recommend reading a hard copy of this book instead of getting an audiobook because you’ll want to really focus and give this book the mindful presence it teaches about. I’m normally a big audiobook fan, but trust me, you’ll want your full attention for this and the other books on this list!

    2. Stay Woke by Justin Michael Williams

I discovered Justin Michael Williams a year ago when I was researching my Master List of Black Wellness Leaders, and he has since become my BIGGEST spiritual and mindfulness teacher. Like, I’m committed. I’ve taken all of his courses, which include The Liberation Experience (on conscious activism) and 40 Days to Transformation (a transformative meditation practice). He is my top recommendation for learning meditation, because he teaches in a way that is real, accessible, and inclusive—his message is that through our own spiritual growth and personal development, we can go on to change the world.

And the best way to access all his wisdom is in his incredible book, Stay Woke. It teaches all the essentials of meditation and mindfulness in a modern, fresh way I’ve never seen before in the spiritual space, but is sorely needed. As the title says: it’s A Meditation Guide for the Rest of Us. Also, you definitely need the hard copy of this book, too, because it’s more of a workbook, really, with spaces for you to practice exercises and reflect.

    3. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

I’m going to give you a little (non) spoiler. What ARE The Four Agreements? Well, they are:

    1. Be impeccable with your word.

    2. Don’t take anything personally.

    3. Don’t make assumptions.

    4. Always do your best.

This must-read book by Don Miguel Ruiz is short, but incredibly powerful. If you really follow these four simple-yet-complex life rules, which the book explores in detail, your entire way of approaching life will change.

This quick read teaches you how to stop self-limiting beliefs and needless suffering. I actually have an awesome Etsy poster of these Four Agreements framed on my wall, as a way to constantly remind myself of this effective code for living a full life.

    4. Daring Greatly by Brené Brown

I STAN Brené Brown. I was once talking to my husband and brought her up and asked if he knew who she was—and he responded that if, after being married to me all those years, if he didn’t know who Brené Brown, there’d be a serious problem. Safe to say I talk about her and her work a lot.

Specifically, Brené is a researcher and professor, focusing for over 20 years on the study of courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy in a very data-driven, realistic way that’s also full of profound wisdom and heart. All of her books are must-reads (the first one I read was The Gifts of Imperfection), but if you could only pick one, I’d tell you to read Daring Greatly to get a solid full scope of her teachings.

This self-help book will make you rethink vulnerability as Brené proves that it’s the real source of courage, as well as the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity. After all, mindfulness is not just about checking your thoughts—it’s about tapping into your heart to show up as the fullest version of yourself, and that requires brave, authentic vulnerability.

    5. The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck by Mark Manson

I love a self-help and personal growth book that keeps it REAL. And it doesn’t get realer than Mark Manson‘s no-bullshit bestseller, The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck. It’s an incredibly entertaining read while also delivering some major truthbombs.

Mark is an OG blogger, providing “life advice that doesn’t suck.” His work is always full of heavily-researched science and data to back his hilarious and intelligent writing style.

In the book, Mark explains how to stop trying to be positive all the time in order to actually be happy, and how to let go of stress you don’t really need. There are only so many things we can give a fuck about, so we need to figure out which ones really matter. It’s an approach to mindfulness that tells it like it is—life is sometimes really messed up and shit happens. But we control how we react to it all in order to free ourselves.

    6. The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein

This book is all about how to make the shift from fear to faith. It goes down a deeper spiritual path than the rest on this list, showing you how to trust the Universe (or God, or whatever you call life’s Higher Power). It takes mindfulness to the next level—by teaching you how to step out of your own way and call in an energetic frequency of faith to co-create your best life.

My good friend Courteney introduced me to spiritual leader Gabrielle (Gabby) Bernstein years ago, when I first mentioned I wanted to try to get into self-help books. At the time, I was the Queen of Control—I wanted to have full control over everything in my life, and was easily stressed and panicked when things weren’t going according to my plan. Through Gabby’s work, I’ve learned how to surrender and feel safe even in the face of uncertainty. The Universe Has Your Back has been the most impactful of the books I’ve read by Gabby (though they’re all amazing), and helped me learn how to clearly listen to my intuition.

    7. Man’s Search For Meaning by Dr. Viktor E. Frankl

Dr. Viktor Frankl was a Jewish professor of neurology and psychiatry at the University of Vienna Medical School—and during WWII, he was imprisoned for three years in Auschwitz, Dachau, and other concentration camps. Talk about someone who can impart some DEEP wisdom on how to get through the most painful of circumstances. Because of his experience as a psychiatrist, Dr. Frankl was able to observe and analyze the various ways his fellow prisoners reacted to their shared horrific experiences. He noticed that some were able to endure more easily than others, and that choosing to transform and find meaning in the suffering was often at the core.

From this, Frankl developed his theory of logotherapy (from the Greek word for “meaning”): that the primary human drive is not pleasure, but rather the discovery and pursuit of meaning. Man’s Search For Meaning is a slim book, but every line is dripping with wisdom; my copy is very heavily underlined, and yours will be, too. It’s heavy but powerfully inspiring.

    8. The Choice by Dr. Edith Eva Eger

Dr. Edith (“Edie”) Eva Eger was also imprisoned at Auschwitz at the same time as Viktor Frankl. However, while he was already a psychiatrist and an adult at that time, Edith was only a 16 year old girl. Her unique perspective on the experience is the perfect accompaniment to Man’s Search For Meaning (I read it right after) because she had to take those traumatic young years and figure out how to heal all on her own.

She explains that the way through this traumatic time in her life was by realizing that while we can’t always control what happens to us, we are always in control of how we react. We have the CHOICE of how we will interpret and respond to the events. Edith chose to remain hopeful even in the darkest of possible circumstances, and it allowed her to continue forward and become an incredibly influential teacher and psychologist herself—Viktor Frankl even became her mentor years after the Holocaust.

Edith is now in her 90s and continuing to thrive, radiating positivity and wisdom. She is a stunning force to learn from, and The Choice is one of those books that will change you—because if she could survive, despite the worst of tragedies, then we can tap into the power of our minds to overcome our own obstacles, too.

    9. Untamed by Glennon Doyle

Chances are, you’ve heard of Untamed. It became a huge bestseller in 2020, and for good reason. Glennon Doyle is a radical feminist, activist, and human—radical in that she does not hold back in speaking the truth and shining a light on all the ways life and society tries to imprison us. While this memoir speaks especially to the experience of being a woman, and how to find empowerment despite all the messaging trying to limit our expression, everyone should read this.

This book explores how joy and inner peace can be found once you start trusting your own intuition, self-worth, and strength in life. It will teach you how to stop abandoning yourself, embrace who you really are, and realize your true power.

A little pro tip: start by reading Glennon’s previous book, Love Warrior (also a great read). I read it right before Untamed, and I think it really helps set the stage. Glennon has undergone an incredible transformation in her own life by overcoming addiction, ending a marriage that wasn’t serving her, and discovering she is gay. Having that backstory made Untamed even more powerful to read than I think it’d be going in dark, since you get to follow her on her journey of growth as you find your own full self-expression.

    10. You Are The Placebo by Dr. Joe Dispenza

You Are The Placebo take a more scientific approach in analyzing the power of our thoughts and mindfulness, using the latest discoveries from neuroscience and quantum physics to teach a spiritually profound practice. It’s all about how your thoughts create your reality—literally. The title “you are the placebo” means that your thoughts can either support your physical health, or harm you. Your body is always listening to what’s going on in your mind. There’s immense power behind your beliefs.

Dr. Joe Dispenza discovered this during his own incredible healing journey. After being hit by a car while on his bike, Joe’s spine was shattered, and he was told he would be forever paralyzed. He spent weeks doing intense meditation to focus on healing his body, visualizing the end result of health he desired. And you guessed it—it worked, and he went on to share this wisdom with his own patients in his chiropractic practice and beyond. I read this book prior to undergoing a major surgery, and I’ve used all that I’ve learned in this book to tap into my body’s healing powers to recover. It will make you think about miracles in a whole new light.

  • Video: 10 Minute Post-Pregnancy Abs/Core Workout

    Post Pregnancy Abs Core Workout

Calling all new moms—here’s a safe and effective core workout to help you start to rebuild your abdominal strength!

I have so many friends who have gotten pregnant recently. I think it’ll be cool to look back and see the numbers for the COVID baby boom one day, because there definitely was one in my social circle. I’ve also worked with a lot of clients who have become pregnant and given birth over my years as a fitness trainer. So I know it can be challenging to know where to start with you core, since you can’t jump back into working your abs the same way you did before.

Ideally, everyone would have a physical therapist to work with after having a baby, but since that’s not often possible, I’m bringing the PT to you. All of these exercises are ones I did with my own physical therapist this past year and are approved for postpartum strengthening!

Nope—I’ve never been pregnant, but I know what it is to lose your core strength from a traumatic injury.

Which childbirth is, in a sense. It’s a LOT for your body to go through. So first please remember to be super kind to yourself during your recovery period. Healing is slow, but you will get there. You may not notice the changes in your body day to day, but over time you’ll feel more comfortable and strong in your body again.

What happened to me is I had chest surgery, basically sewing my sternum back down after I had a breast augmentation go wrong. Because of this, I couldn’t use my arms at all for months. My entire upper body became weak. I was literally sewn inward, and couldn’t even stand up straight. I lost all my core strength. And had to rebuild one step at a time.

It’s important to love your body through it all. It’s amazing what your body can do!

I mean—you just grew a human. Your body is INCREDIBLE. Love it through every stage—even when you feel your most weak. Our bodies are a sacred vessel that we so easily abuse and take for granted, especially as women who are trained to pick apart our appearance.

Try to focus instead on gratitude for all that your body can do, rather than what it looks like in any particular moment.

This simple 10 minute Post-Pregnancy Abs/Core Workout will help you rebuild your abdominal strength from your innermost core out.

You have to ease back into core workouts really gently, and this video is the perfect way to start exercises once your doctor approves. I offer ways to modify the exercises, but please always listen to your body and consult with your doctor with any questions or concerns. Start slow—a little bit of progress evert day creates big changes. (Remember it took 9 months to grow the baby!)

When you’re pregnant, your core shifts and stretches (your organs actually move around) to make room for your baby. So, the thing to focus on first is a feeling of cinching in your waistline (all the way around your body) in towards your center, towards your spine. Imagine an umbrella folding in, everything pulling to center. This is what is going to work your very innermost core muscles, called your transverse abdominal muscles. Breathe deeply and focus on the pull in sensation as you exhale

We target your transverse abdominal muscles bigtime in the below 10 minute Post-Pregnancy Abs / Core Workout video, along with your obliques, back, and chest, which all connect together to make up your core. This will help improve your posture, strengthen your back for holding you baby, and help prevent injury while keeping you healthy all around!

This workout is also safe and effective for those who have had C-sections; in fact, I made it specifically for a friend who recently had one!

    You’ll do:

    • Plank
      • In this video you’ll begin doing a plank at the wall. You’ll gradually increase the incline by walking away from the wall, then finding a counter or chair, then on your knees on the ground, until finally a full plank—it took me a year to do this, for context. Go slow.
    • Walk the dogs
      • Lift your right arm and left leg, then switch.
      • Try to avoid rocking your hips or chest.
    • Foot march lifts, lying on back
      • Keep a neutral flat back on the ground the whole time (low back is slightly off the ground).
      • Can advance this move by switching feet midair, then trying both feet up and hovering.
    • Oblique leg triangle lowers, lying on back
      • Lower knees down towards the ground/out to the side, then up.
    • Side planks
      • Forearm down, lift up out of your shoulder, hips lift.
      • Can modify by keeping your hips down.

  • List of Socially-Distanced Outdoor Workout Classes in Los Angeles

    Los Angeles Outdoor Workout Speir

    » Speir Pilates «

Tired of at-home workouts? Try one of these socially-distanced outdoor workout classes in Los Angeles!

If you’ve been going a little stir-crazy after 6+ months of COVID-19, or are feeling like it’s hard to keep your motivation up to exercise at home, you’re not alone. But luckily if you’re located in sunny Southern California, you can now try outdoor workout classes!

Los Angeles is currently unable to host indoor classes due to pandemic restrictions, so studios and trainers have pivoted to offer safer outdoor workout options instead, taking their classes to the city’s parks and rooftops.

I was inspired to put this master list together after my friend Arielle Berneman did one for her blog Sweat in SD. If you’re in San Diego, click here for her list of SD outdoor workout classes!

Although I usually call San Diego home, I’m currently living in Los Angeles again during the pandemic. And after doing some research, I realized I couldn’t find a similar comprehensive list of socially-distanced outdoor workout classes being offered in LA.

So here it is! Big thanks to everyone who helped me put this together.

Doing an outdoor workout is a great way to get the class experience without the fear.

I miss teaching in person, and going to fitness classes. I know you do, too. And working out is incredibly important, now more than ever. Exercise boosts your immunity, strengthens your body, and can help with mental health issues like depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

Gyms, studios, and trainers have all been hit hard by the effects of the coronavirus. If you’re able, keep supporting your favorite trainers by taking their classes, whether virtually or in person at one of the spots listed below. (I offer my Meditation and Yoga classes online and on YouTube, and hope to start teaching in LA soon!)

When you go to an outdoor workout class, you’ll be able to keep a safe 6 ft+ distance from others, get some fresh air, and feel more connected. The CDC has recommended doing activities outside because the open air keeps virus-containing particles moving away from you.

And don’t forget that just being outside has health benefits, too!

I’ve been doing my daily yoga practice in our backyard each morning to help break up the monotony of being home all day, and to get some time with nature, which has also been proven to boost your health and mood.

I actually really prefer exercising outside (teaching beach yoga over the years has spoiled me), so I think getting to do our favorite studio workouts in the open air is a real treat!

For this list, I grouped all the outdoor workout classes below by rough location throughout Los Angeles, then by alphabetical order. LA’s huge, so this list covers mostly just the main city area, from Downtown to Sherman Oaks to Redondo Beach-ish.

Happily, traffic isn’t nearly as bad as usual in LA right now (maybe the one bright spot of COVID?), and getting in a workout is definitely worth a short drive!

A few things you need to know:

    • This list is up to date as of Jan 7, 2021, but of course things are constantly changing. The best way to get the most recent info is most likely the studio’s Instagram, or their websites linked below.
    • Yes, you’ll still need to wear a mask. At this time, I believe you also still have to wear a face covering during the actual workout, but that may change.
    • I know it’s obvious, but I just want to reiterate: all of the classes listed below are OUTDOORS, so bring sun protection like sunscreen, hat, and a jacket. Take care of your pretty skin.
    • I highly recommend Bluestone Sunshield’s face visors–they offer 99% UVA/UVB protection and are way more comfortable than a mask to wear during workouts that require you to continue to wear a face covering—win/win. They even have a new clear shield with UV protection! Use the code Sunshield15 for 15% off. I’m not affiliated with them in any way, just a super fan.
    • Also, bring water. And remember to keep your social distance from your fellow workout buddies.

    Have fun!

  • How To Fix Camel Toe: JIV Athletics

    JIV Athletics | Infinite Embers

Comfortable thong underwear that also delivers on its promise to fix camel toe?

Unbelievable—until you try JIV Athletics thongs for yourself. (btw, this post is pure love, not sponsored) Now, I personally have never been that bothered by camel toe, my own or otherwise. I embrace that all bodies are bodies, so it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

It’s so important for us to love ourselves and the bodies that house us.

If you tend to get camel toe—it’s okay. It’s normal and natural. Getting it depends on anatomy and what you’re wearing. But it’s also clearly not cool if it makes you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable.

    Sometimes it’s just gotta go.

    What’s camel toe?

It’s what happens when your leggings/shorts/etc ride up in your crotch, around the labia. So it sort of outlines the genitalia, giving the appearance of a camel’s foot, which is a cloven hoof. It’s also called a vagina wedgie. To get specific.

As a full-time yoga instructor, I wear leggings all day long as my uniform. And I wear them most of the time when I’m not teaching too, to be honest. They’re they most comfortable clothes I have! Some of my leggings do tend to give me camel toe, and I want to keep things professional.

Unfortunately, the glaring truth is that as womxn, you know it can be important to not draw in unwanted attention. (If it’s wanted, then great and more power to you!) But I feel safer knowing I’m not going to draw people’s eyes down. When you fix camel toe, you eliminate that distraction.

We all want to feel as comfortable as possible—especially while exercising.

When you feel confident in how you look, that confidence translates into the quality of your focus. This means you’ll get a better workout/dive deeper inward during your yoga flow. You want to be able to focus on yourself, and how the movement feels in your body—not worrying about how you look.

So what you’re wearing is pretty important. If you feel like you’re constantly quickly tugging down the ol’ camel toe creep-up, you’re not going to get as in the zone as you would otherwise during this time.

    JIV Athletics | Infinite Embers

Luckily, there’s now a super easy solution to fix camel toe.

    The secret’s in the underwear!

JIV Athletics is a female-owned small business that was created specifically with the active user in mind. Their thong underwear is designed to be worn with leggings, both low and high rise. But they’re honestly so comfortable, I wear them all the time.

JIV first came onto my radar because they’re based in San Diego. Nika Cleaver, the Co-Founder, did a pop-up sale at PURE Indoor Cycling, where I used to teach spin. I loved the idea and the product right away!

Nika is an elegant, warm, and inspiring entrepreneur who, in partnership with her mother, took an idea and made it a reality. She has a fashion degree from FIDM and a business degree from Pepperdine University, as well as the hustle to go out and pass out advertisement cards at yoga festivals. So I have a feeling her business will do very well.

I love Nika and JIV Athletic’s mission, which is to empower all womxn to feel confident in their athletic-wear.

JIV is a Hindi word that means a “living being” and “an entity instilled with life force.” It also means to “breathe” and “be alive.” So beautiful!

Their underwear have a higher price point than the average thong (averaging ~$30 a pair), though they definitely feel 100% work the price. I waited a little until I had enough extra change for the splurge for this set, their High Rise Thong and Athletic Bra, which is limited edition but now one of my favorite bras.

They’re both so comfortable. I know I keep using that word to describe them, but it’s the way the fabric slide so smoothly across your skin. They are luxury underwear for sure, and are comfortable enough to even work out in.

And yes! They really work and get rid of camel toe completely.

(Click to zoom in. You can see on the left photo that the center line seam on my leggings is starting to go up and IN. To be honest, I chose the mildest photo I got of my camel toe to share here, because after a little movement it got way worse and it felt a little X rated lol. In the photo on the right, with the thong on, my leggings lay nice and smooth!)

    How do they work?

JIV Athletics makes their thongs with three layers (which creates a light padding). First, there’s the smooth outer shell fabric—it’s breathable, moisture wicking, tag-less, and roll-proof.

The real magic is in their patent-pending middle layer insert, a 3D tech spacer. From their website:

This cutting edge fabric is the key to looking flawless in your tightest leggings. A full coverage gusset to smooth out unsightly silhouettes and the perfect placement to protect you from the most embarrising front wedige……#saynotocameltoe

Lastly, the inside liner is made from soft cotton, which is the safest fabric for your V.

Also, I’m so excited because JIV gave me a special promo code to share with you all, if you’d like to buy online:

Use the Promo Code INFINITE20 for 20% OFF your purchase from JIV Athletics!

Doesn’t get better than that! I love their products so much, and I know you will, too.

    JIV Athletics | Infinite Embers

I hope they help empower you to feel even more confident in your form-fitting looks.

That’s the ultimate goal: for you to feel your best! Confidence has such a big impact on your mental health, and thus your happiness. It helps you form self-love.

If your camel toe’s been bothering you, you can buy JIV Athletics online (with free domestic shipping) or in select stores. They currently offer three styles of their Athletic Thong: Low Rise, Mid Rise, and High Rise. This is so they correspond to your leggings so they stay invisible and seamless while you move.

Over my eight years of teaching, I’ve seen every form of camel toe (and worse) you can think of. At the end of the day, we’re all human.

But if you can be a more confident, legging-rocking human who does not have to think about camel toe when you go into downward facing dog and can focus on connecting your mind-body-spirit instead… then even better!

  • Meet My Favorite Yoga Teacher: Elka Haeckel

I’m so excited to introduce you today to my yoga teacher and mentor, Elka Haeckel!

I call her the best because she really is. Elka Haeckel changed yoga for me. I’ve been practicing since I was 15, but I’ve yet to come across another teacher who’s as knowledgable about both the physical asana (“poses”) practice as she is about living yoga.

In addition to knowing about the deep history and philosophies of yoga and its sister science Ayurveda, Elka radiates authenticity. She speaks with intention, and teaches from her heart. This is what she teaches to her yoga teacher trainees, which is why I found her YTT so transformative.

I first met Elka by pure intuition.

I was in a really painful period of my life, deep in the process of trying to learn about the body to heal my chronic pain. Elka Haeckel had just opened her new studio in San Diego, Elka Yoga & Wellness Center, which has a gorgeous outdoor aerial yoga deck. I was newly into aerial yoga and went to her studio for a class in Dec 2015.

I hadn’t even met Elka herself yet when a Facebook ad popped up for their upcoming yoga teacher training that coming Jan-Feb. I’d thought about doing a yoga teacher training before, but not seriously. But after reading about the training on her website, a voice inside me (my intuition) whispered loud and clear: Do it.

So I did, and it set me on a path that would change everything.

I wanted to do yoga teacher training partially because I knew I might teach it (I was already teaching barre, spin, and Pilates at that time), but mostly because I was seeking the deeper side of yoga. I knew my pain was worsened by my lifelong anxiety, and that yoga was supposed to be good for that.

I’d taken yoga classes all my life but really knew nothing about its rich history, about the teachings that help bring mental peace. I wanted to go beyond doing Warrior 2 pose and find out what the real juice was behind yoga. What gives it its healing power.

And let me tell you: Elka brings the juice.

Keeping life juicy is one of Elka’s most common sayings—and she fully embodies this. I learned so much from Elka, not only how to teach yoga to others but also about who I am and how I want to live through a yogic lens.

She continues to be a powerful mentor and friend for me, and I know you’ll love her as much as I do. If you’re in San Diego, be sure to visit her incredible studio/wellness center and learn from her in person! Otherwise, read to the bottom for ways to work with Elka online from around the world.

So without further ado, enjoy my interview with Elka Haeckel:

Elka Haeckel is the founder of Elka Yoga and Co-Owner of Elka Yoga & Wellness Center in San Diego.

Elka has been teaching yoga since 2004. She is a worldwide yoga instructor who has developed her own juicy, unique yoga practices in addition to traditional styles. Follow Elka on Instagram for free classes and teachings!

She’s a certified Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500 Hatha Yoga instructor with additional certifications in Ayurveda, Reiki, Prana Flow, Restorative Yoga, Tantra Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, SUP Yoga, Yoga Therapy and Thai Medical Massage. She is also a certified life coach.

Elka’s exuberance and passion for teaching, extensive knowledge of yoga philosophy, and holistic health, combined with her experience of owning a successful San Diego yoga studio, international training, workshops, retreats and teacher training makes her a positive force to be reckoned with. Elka’s friendly approach to students, friends and business partners inspires an inner transformation within everyone she meets. As she likes to remind everyone:

“We are just getting started on this journey, so open your heart and your mind to see your true possibilities!”

Hi Elka! Tell me about how you began your yoga journey—what got you into yoga?

My journey with yoga started when I moved here to the USA in 1999. I was born in northeast Brazil.  Today I’ve been in the U.S. for half of my life.

When I was 23 years old I had my first episode of a panic attack and consequently, I suffered severely from depression and anxiety.

It was then I found yoga. After years of treatment with medication along with doing yoga and meditation, I was able to get off of the medication and I continued my path as a holistic health practitioner.

Yoga was an awakening for me.

I was very wild in my 20’s, partying too much and very disconnected to my sacred temple: my body. Yoga brought me a strong connection to the ground of my being, as well as led me to my purpose which is to LOVE by helping others.

When did you decide to train to be a teacher yourself?

I took my very first teacher training in 2003, but the training I did was about following a script. I wasn’t really thinking about teaching yoga, but I was doing yoga every single day.

One day, my teacher offered to train me for free if I would teach at his studio. And that was the moment when the seed of teaching yoga was planted in my heart.

In 2003 I also got married, and my husband and I took one semester off to surf in Costa Rica, Peru, and Brazil. We stayed 4 months in Costa Rica, but we spent all of our money in the first month. So we both had to start working in Costa Rica.

I started teaching yoga in a gym in Costa Rica for trade, so I could use their gym. It worked out great as I was practicing my yoga teaching as well as my Spanish.

In 2004 we came back to the U.S., and I started teaching the right way—from the heart. In 2005 I took an amazing teacher training with Kathy Lee (in memory) and Diane Ambrosini where I became ERYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance). Since then I have continued my path as a yoga student as well.

How did you build your career as a teacher in San Diego?

After a few months teaching for a few studios in San Diego, I started to teach yoga by the bay outdoors, and it became very popular.

However, when the winter came, it got too cold to continue. I decided to take the risk and open my own yoga studio, called Namaste Yoga Center in Ocean Beach, San Diego.

The space was very small but very cozy and warm. The studio became popular fast in the community. In 2007, I had to expand for a bigger location.

What led you to create the Elka Yoga & Wellness Center?

In 2012, I went through a divorce and decided to sell Namaste Yoga Center to have some time for my personal life. I was still teaching yoga in a few different places in San Diego, and leading teacher trainings.

I was also learning more about additional wellness therapies. I had become a holistic health practitioner specializing in Thai Medical Massage in 2008. I did many other wellness trainings as well, including Ayur-Yoga, Craniosacral, and Prenatal.

In 2015, me and Anna Fernandez (my soul sister and business partner) decided to open a center that would offer both yoga and wellness. And Elka Yoga & Wellness Center was born!

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

I always say “teaching is healing for me”. When I am teaching, I am so present with each one of my students. Even nowadays, connecting with each other virtually, I can still feel them.

Teaching is a feeling. Sometimes I think about how many years I’ve been teaching and it never gets old to me. I am always inspired to learn more, to serve more.

And mostly, it is priceless to me to witness the healing process of my students. I have a range of ages of students, from 15-90’s, and I absolutely love all of them. I learn from all of their differences and limitations. They are my greatest teachers.

I always say during the training, “Your best teachers are your students, so practice teaching people who have never done yoga before. They will challenge you to think with the beginner’s mind.”

My passion is not only teaching yoga but also leading yoga teacher trainings. I’ve been leading YTTs since 2011 and this Fall will be my number 22, including one in Brazil.

I’ve trained over 200 people and it only gets juicier every time. The program that I’ve created for the last decade is beyond becoming a yoga teacher. For me it is rewarding to see the way those beautiful souls unfold themselves into a powerful, life-transformational experience. I absolutely LOVE doing the trainings. And what I love about it the most is the community we create.

How can we practice with you online if we’re not in San Diego?

I have a YouTube Channel with short yoga videos for those who don’t have a full hour but at least 15-20 minutes.

I currently offer life-coaching sessions through Zoom—find out more here.

I also lead yoga retreats once a year somewhere around the globe. I’ve done them in Mexico, Costa Rica, Bali, and Spain. 2021 will be Brazil if the Universe allows.
